Hurricane Coltrane, by Taya Okerlund

Merrill Hinton is a lightning rod in a town named for bad weather. He's an ace in math, but not smart enough to put together the pieces of his puzzling life, especially where finding his unknown father is concerned.

Musical genius Robbie Stubbs was born in nearby polygamist compound Colorado City. He has the chops to become another John Coltrane, but that will take running away from home, and into a firestorm of controversy--the kind his friend Merrill knows best.

Merrill sets Robbie onto a course that could rocket them both onto center stage, but being the focus of wide public attention will create serious issues. Robbie's mother is not well, and the shock of her son breaking the family rules like this may put her over the edge.

And Merrill Hinton? His precarious future will be compromised in ways he doesn't yet realize.

Review
"Robbie is everything I expected him to be without feeling cliche. That's an accomplishment. He felt real. His problems were heart breaking and I wanted to slap a few people on his behalf. My favorite line in the book is where Robbie talks about still being in prison. Being an artistic person myself, I could relate to that." --Charity Bradford, author The Magic Wakes

Unlikely and Heartwarming
By Kit-Kat75
Merrill is an extremely smart high school student, but he doesn't do well socially. He doesn't know his dad, has a mom who is a big activist and helps rescue polygamous victims, and a sweet grandma who tells him how it is. He's trying to figure out who he is and what he wants to do with his life. A random meeting with Robbie, a boy from the nearby polygamist compound, changes Merrill's life. Robbie is a genius when it comes to music and will do almost anything to succeed, even giving up his family.

Merrill and Robbie are so similar, yet so different. They come from different worlds, but they both show a lot of bravery and strength. I love Merrill's grandma--she is so accepting and loves those around her unconditionally.

I love the unlikely friendship that forms when decisions are made and opportunities are taken to embark on this road to growing up. I'm still trying to figure out exactly how I feel after reading this. I was excited, nervous, and happy for these boys, yet my heart was wrenched in places and I felt emotionally drained. There were a few parts that I wish had been fleshed out just a little more, but overall, this was a great journey with well-written characters and a fantastic setting.

Content: mild language (a few mild words); mild religious elements (one boy is a Mormon and one is FLDS, but not much religion is discussed, aside from a few morals each has--definitely not preachy); very mild romance (very brief mention of an unwed mother, crushes); very mild violence (brief mention of abuse).

A tale of friendship, music, and fathers
By Jaren B Wilson
Hurricane Coltrane is set in Hurricane, Utah. Merrill is a smarty-pants high schooler with an activist mom and a peaches-dehydrating grandma and no known father, and he is dying to get out of town.

He meets Robbie, a buttoned-up kid who's escaped from the nearby polygamist compound. And who is also a musical genius.

These two plot together, get Robbie an alto sax, and land Robbie a spot on an X-Factor type of reality show. Merrill even gets to play his trombone as backup. But Robbie's mom and sisters are suffering back on the compound because Robbie got out, and Merrill's starting to unravel the mystery of who his father might be--and whether that means he'll never break out of Hurricane, Utah.

I have a soft spot for friendship stories, because that's such a huge part of high school and is something I don't see in books as much as I'd like. Merrill and Robbie have an unlikely friendship, and they both have to navigate the social waters of high school.

I really, really loved the setting for this story. I've never been to southern Utah, so diving into the peach harvesting and pomegranate dehydrating and the Mormon community and the polygamist compound and the heat and the small-town vibe was fun.

And the main character, Merrill, has the most delightful voice and funny personality. It was a pleasure to spend time with him as a character.

I enjoyed Hurricane Coltrane a great deal.
By simmaren
I enjoyed Hurricane Coltrane a great deal. I appreciated Ms. Okerlund's sensitive portrayal of the developing relationships among the principal characters, and in particular the growing pains experience by Merrill, a maturing but not mature male high school genius/nerd who can't seem to find a good fit in either square holes or round holes. The music theme was well done and interesting -- I played a trombone in high school and could identify with everything except the talent. I also liked that the polyg subculture, essential to the plot, wasn't sensationalized as it might have been. Bad people are bad people no matter where they are found. Ms. Okerlund's descriptions were vivid and effective -- I could feel the heat and smell the dust as I read, and her book was (in a way) an introduction to a part of the country that most of us haven't experienced and might like. The plot twist involving Merrill's father was a bit unlikely but explained a lot that was mysterious about Merrill's mom, an admirable character with believable flaws. Highly recommended, and I'd like to read Ms. Okerlund's next book.
