About the Author
Steven G. Laitz is Associate Professor of Music Theory and Affiliate Faculty Member in Chamber Music at the Eastman School of Music, and serves on the piano faculty at the Chautauqua Institution. He has received various teaching awards, has presented and published work on nineteenth-century music and pedagogy, and is the author of The Complete Musician: An Integrated Approach to Tonal Theory, Analysis, and Listening, Second Edition (OUP, 2007).
Christopher Bartlette is Assistant Professor of Music at Binghamton University. His research in music cognition and performance has led to articles and presentations at national and international conferences in music theory, perception, and cognition.

excellent, just like its 'bigger brother'

this is a condensed version of 'The Complete Musician' by the same author. It is really good because basically I get two versions of the lessons: this book has a condensed version, while The Complete Musician offers an extended version of the same topic.
And that REALLY is great, because by reading from both books, I learn even better.
Also, 'Graduate....', like The Complete Musician, comes with a DVD recorded by a real orchestra. This teaching method incorporates a serious technological advancement by simply including the musical examples. It is really helpful to read about a concept and to immediately being able to listen and understand by listening.
My only gripe are:
1. not all examples are recorded on dvd. I don't see why not, especially considering that it would greatly aid the review of any topics at later times (more often than not, you have to review things you are learning, it's normal)
2. the examples are mostly orchestral. I wish they had a version for easy to intermediate keyboard players as well.
3. no exercises at all, for that you have to get the workbook. And the workbook, as far I know ( I don't have it) do not have 'possible solutions' to the assignemnts.
However, these books are the best, bar none. I love that dvd thrown in there, as it's music examples are too important to be ignored.
As mentioned, I would also like to see solutions to any exercises present in the workbook, because I think a lot can be learned by comparing my solution with one by the authors. It would be the next best thing from taking lessons directly from them.
Also, I highly recommend you get both books. For a modest price you are essentially buying all the standard music knowledge required by any serious student or pro musician.

Does exactly what the title says; however, lacking in correct examples and solutions.

On the positive, this book is exactly what it makes itself out to be - a graduate-level review of tonal theory. It spends little precious page-space on concepts like counterpoint and fugue. It also make no effort to address post-tonal theory. And, as other reviewers have pointed out, it makes no effort to explain concepts on a basic fundamental level, so this is not a book for someone learning these ideas for the first time. However, this book does exactly what it sets out to do, and it does it well.
I have one major gripe, however. As a student beginning graduate study, I purchased this book and its companion workbook for personal study. No one is looking over my shoulder checking my work. I suspect that at the graduate level many of us are self-motivated. In many cases, I would read a few pages, attempt an assignment, and be left wondering just how good my answers were. I would have loved to see possible answers to the workbook exercises and more correct study examples in the text.
I know that the traditional idea is to hide the answers from the students so they don't cheat. I didn't become a grad student to cheat. I came to learn. Whether taking a class or learning on my own, I would expect that there won't be a prof leaning over my every assignment and marking it up in red. I would learn a lot more efficiently if I could check my own work. I would stay that this book and it's companion workbook would easily be 5-star materials if they fixed this issue; as is, the materials are a bit gimpy.

Portable Common Practice Reference

This text is a handy reference to Common Practice harmony and form. Also nice is the small size and weight, which makes it easy to lug around in a backpack, unlike larger harmony texts. I would not recommend learning harmony from it (I much prefer the approach in Theory of Harmony for self study), though it is nice to have around to look up details on sequences or applied dominants or so forth.
