Just needs decent graphics and illustrations

I enthusiastically recommend this book to golfers with an interest in science/math/engineering, or scientists/mathematicians/engineers with an interest in golf. You should get Search for the Perfect Swing first. But once you have that out of the way, this book is an excellent addition to a golf library.
The biggest shortcomings of The Physics of Golf are (1) a lack of quality illustrations/pictures/graphics and (2) a rather terse treatment of the material. I feel that the author probably has enough research to go on for 4-500 pages but called it quits at a much more concise size. I'm all for concise, but not when it leaves me feeling some useful material was left out.

About the Author

Steven G. Laitz is Associate Professor of Music Theory and Affiliate Faculty Member in Chamber Music at the Eastman School of Music, and serves on the piano faculty at the Chautauqua Institution. He has received various teaching awards, has presented and published work on nineteenth-century music and pedagogy, and is the author of The Complete Musician: An Integrated Approach to Tonal Theory, Analysis, and Listening, Second Edition (OUP, 2007).

Christopher Bartlette is Assistant Professor of Music at Binghamton University. His research in music cognition and performance has led to articles and presentations at national and international conferences in music theory, perception, and cognition.

excellent, just like its 'bigger brother'

this is a condensed version of 'The Complete Musician' by the same author. It is really good because basically I get two versions of the lessons: this book has a condensed version, while The Complete Musician offers an extended version of the same topic.
And that REALLY is great, because by reading from both books, I learn even better.

Also, 'Graduate....', like The Complete Musician, comes with a DVD recorded by a real orchestra. This teaching method incorporates a serious technological advancement by simply including the musical examples. It is really helpful to read about a concept and to immediately being able to listen and understand by listening.

My only gripe are:

1. not all examples are recorded on dvd. I don't see why not, especially considering that it would greatly aid the review of any topics at later times (more often than not, you have to review things you are learning, it's normal)

2. the examples are mostly orchestral. I wish they had a version for easy to intermediate keyboard players as well.

3. no exercises at all, for that you have to get the workbook. And the workbook, as far I know ( I don't have it) do not have 'possible solutions' to the assignemnts.

However, these books are the best, bar none. I love that dvd thrown in there, as it's music examples are too important to be ignored.

As mentioned, I would also like to see solutions to any exercises present in the workbook, because I think a lot can be learned by comparing my solution with one by the authors. It would be the next best thing from taking lessons directly from them.

Does exactly what the title says; however, lacking in correct examples and solutions.

On the positive, this book is exactly what it makes itself out to be - a graduate-level review of tonal theory. It spends little precious page-space on concepts like counterpoint and fugue. It also make no effort to address post-tonal theory. And, as other reviewers have pointed out, it makes no effort to explain concepts on a basic fundamental level, so this is not a book for someone learning these ideas for the first time. However, this book does exactly what it sets out to do, and it does it well.

I have one major gripe, however. As a student beginning graduate study, I purchased this book and its companion workbook for personal study. No one is looking over my shoulder checking my work. I suspect that at the graduate level many of us are self-motivated. In many cases, I would read a few pages, attempt an assignment, and be left wondering just how good my answers were. I would have loved to see possible answers to the workbook exercises and more correct study examples in the text.

I know that the traditional idea is to hide the answers from the students so they don't cheat. I didn't become a grad student to cheat. I came to learn. Whether taking a class or learning on my own, I would expect that there won't be a prof leaning over my every assignment and marking it up in red. I would learn a lot more efficiently if I could check my own work. I would stay that this book and it's companion workbook would easily be 5-star materials if they fixed this issue; as is, the materials are a bit gimpy.

Portable Common Practice Reference

This text is a handy reference to Common Practice harmony and form. Also nice is the small size and weight, which makes it easy to lug around in a backpack, unlike larger harmony texts. I would not recommend learning harmony from it (I much prefer the approach in Theory of Harmony for self study), though it is nice to have around to look up details on sequences or applied dominants or so forth.

Birth of the Kingdom

Jan Guillou did a wonderful job in creating the charector of Arn, I love the way his story began when his mother was pregnant for him. He is thoughtfully and throuoghly developed as a person, I enjoyed this aspect of the story, very much.

The first 2 books were really page turners, for which I would easily give 5 stars. I found the 3rd book too slow, too much information about the wedding, and the buildings, many of the details that didn't add to the story, but more or less felt like gossip. I felt like it was a way to fill the pages.
With that being said it was still a good story, and it did end in such a way where all questions were answered. The only other thing I would have like to see is a section that went through and told which parts of the story was fictional and which was real.

Satisfactory but unexciting ending of the series

This is the third volume of the trilogy that started with the Road to Jerusalem. (Which I did not review but would have given 5 stars if I had). It is the longest and the least enjoyable of the three. (My wife got me a birthday present from Amazon.co.uk where this was released in March)

What can I say? Arn Magnusson makes it back from the holy land with a motley crew of Saracens, Franks and others who are bound by oath to serve him for five years. Arn uses their skills to help him achieve two goals. The first is building an invincible fortress for the Folking clan and the second is building a new church.

Basically, this volume wraps up the whole Folgung-Erik saga. Arn gets back with Cecilia Algotsdotter of course. And Arn works to build security of the eventual kindom of Sweden. But this is all done at painful length without any of the bright dialog. action and pacing of the first novel. Most of the real action comes in the last 50 pages (of almost 600) as the author ties up the real history with the battle of Lena and its aftermath.

There is no way I can give this more than three stars as it almost feels as if a different author wrote this ponderous tome.

Outstanding Author of Birth of the Kingdom

This is by far the best Templar Trilogy (and there are many) that I have read. It kept you reading that next page, chapter, etc. It also kept you waiting for the Postman to bring that next copy.

I must also give an Outstanding rating to the translaters that brought the books to English. Many times, books loose information in the translation, but not these. Fine job by all!!!

Provocative

IIn Forest Primeval, Vievee Francis provokes what feels like an intimate conversation with the reader or as a commentary on the book jacket puts it “a sacred conversation with the reader, wrestling with the distressing angel for all of us and demanding a blessing.” There’s such honesty in these poems, a willingness to be direct and risky around matters of the heart, including revenge or resentment: "When you left, I went to your swan's coop, / snapped every slender neck / in the lot." The speaker seems always in quest of truth driven by a curiosity about what drives her and what is actually going on, and a willingness to challenge her own assumptions. The lyricism of so many lines stand out (“like a sorrow of banjoes”), along with the evocative use of fairy tales and myth to address questions of male-female relationships, beauty, and modern living. The internal Dantesque explorations remind me of Frank Gaspar’s poetry; the precise clarity of thought and expression coming from deep wounding, of Louise Gl�ck’s; and the artful, provocative use of essential questions, of Mary Oliver:

“…Those with love will have it.
Those without will go without. Did you think it would be
otherwise?”

and,

“ …What kind of girl are you?
The kind who wants to live, I said, and I did want to
until I didn’t anymore. But I wanted the leaving
to be on my terms, so I hit my father back.”

and,

“From the window I considered the fall, but
I was so pleased to be alive, to realize I now had you,

Beautiful, haunting and not afraid of the ugly making ...

Vievee Francis is one of the most exciting poets I've discovered within the last year. Beautiful, haunting and not afraid of the ugly making her words cut twice as deep. Most poets will spend years trying to replicate a work such as Forest Primeval and never come close to its incandescent, transcendent nature.The rhythm is both as blunt as a sharp point of a cliff and at other times it stops dead in its track to call attention to a small and intricate detail otherwise ignored. It is the perfect observation of the intense joys and sadness or loneliness of an artistic dreamer life and of the life of a woman in general. I am proud to call Vievee Francis a fellow woman and feminist. This book is so well worth the purchase. An absolute hidden gem. I promise you will not be disappointed.

In Forest Primeval, she covers difficult emotional terrain regarding race, gender, image, and the and the author's personal biography that extends from the rural farm life of Texas to the cold concrete of Chicago and on to the woods of North Carolina. The poet's visceral use of image and stunning insight will make you wince as you turn the page to the next poem, and the next, and the next...

So disappointed..

So disappointed... Only 22 pages and basically nothing happened. Also, most of the characters from the show are barely in this. Mostly it's Liz Keen doing athletic stuff in skimpy clothing. Some is Red and Mr. Kaplan having a chat that is sort of relevant to the show, but probably will be duplicated on air in a better way, and the task force gets a couple of pages at most. If you want to see Tom Keen he's not even mentioned and the timeline occurs well before the season 2 finale so it's just a random baddie of the week storyline.

I feel like the disclaimer that this was a big download was misleading. I assumed there was going to be more to it. The lack of listed page count was a glaring omission. If you want to know the breakdown, there are 22 pages with actual story panels. The rest is filler art, mostly of stuff you'd already have seen like Red's FBI poster or multiple pages of the same cover art.

Erudite, Gripping and Fresh Interpretation of Aristotle.

Francis Sparshott is an excellent poet as well as an excellent philosopher, and his command of language and his depth of insight are both highly manifest in this book. Sparshott has given here the best modern overall commentary on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, itself possibly the greatest of Aristotle's works. In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle brings the perspective of a great observational biologist to bear on the observation of the human, in order to assess what our natural needs and capacities are, and what we need to do in order to have a fulfilling life. Aristotle's answer is, of course, subtle and complex, but it is summed up in Sparshott's title: we need to take our lives seriously. Sparshott's text demonstrates at every point the depth of insight developed over decades of thinking along with Aristotle (and, of course, along with lots of other philosophers) about these issues of human life. The result is a book that is simultaneously *brilliant* in its bringing together of Aristotle's texts and profound in its commentary on human experience. The first 50 pages are the most mind-blowing, and they should be read carefully by all students of Aristotle, to be sure, and by anybody else studying philosophy. Whenever I teach graduate courses in Aristotle, I assign this book as a companion text, because, (whereas I find that commentaries usually have the effect of lowering the level of initiative that the students take in studying the original books), this book always leads the students to be more probing and more thoughtful in their approach to Aristotle's texts. I recommend it very highly.

Perhaps not for the rank beginner

I'm perfectly comfortable trading equities so thought this would serve as a good introduction to commodities trading. I found it to be somewhat disorganized, rambling, and at times tangential. The introductory chapters at times tended away from the subject at hand and over to issues that the author had experienced over years of work as a broker. While the story proved interesting, it might have been better as an appendix. In fact, the text provides a useful overview of the commodities trading industry, with interesting behind-the-scenes detail and history. But the way in which the material is provided will not necessarily leave the reader ready to jump into the commodities market. To that end, I would have preferred a greater number of case examples and results given a specific trade and market activity. Perhaps that will be in the Second Book on Commodities, but for now, as an amateur in this particular area, I will look elsewhere.

Commodities Trading Starting Point

Carley Garner is back releasing a 2nd edition of her book "A Trader's First Book on Commodities."

This edition has a new expanded introduction that deals with the recent changes in the industry regulators have enacted to protect brokerage clients with the recent failures of MF Global and PFGBEST along with what you can do to protect yourself.

There is also explanations on a speculators role in volatility and how it leads to the fortunes made and lost.

With the current high-inflationary environment in precious metals, oil, and food, with the anticipation of the effects quantitative easing will have who would not be interested in giving the commodity markets a look? You do not have to buy gold bullion off television commercials, you can trade gold futures and options on futures and benefit from trends and never have to take physical delivery of it. You can make money on oil going up, as all of your friends are bemoaning about the price of gas when they are filling up their SUV's.

Carley Garner has written a high quality beginners book for commodities trading and she does a very good job explaining the basics you'll need to know in order to get started trading in these markets. You will learn the history of commodity futures and how they came to exist and why. The book explains that all commodity brokerage accounts are also margin accounts while showing both the advantages to leverage and the risks involved in using margin.

She includes fascinating chart examples from history showing what would have been won or lost during potential irregular trading periods, which is what traders refer to as volatility within the markets.

The book devotes a chapter to explaining what type of broker you will need depending on your type of trading and your personal experience level. You will understand all basic order types from one chapter: limit, market, stop loss, buy stop, good til canceled, etc. I found the chapter on how to read commodity quotes, the explanation of contract sizes , and the amount of price movement per tick for each commodity educational and useful. (I am a stock and stock option trader so this book was educational for me).

The information contained in the chapter on emotional stability is what I have found to be the most relevant in my own stock trading over the past twelve years. I have seen that the ability to contain the emotions of fear, greed, and frustration will determine your personal success in the markets more than anything else. I like that the author explained the dynamic of frustration as it is not usually covered by most other authors, but is crucial to overcome so you can maintain the perseverance to win in the long term.

Risk management also plays a huge part in winning in the long term. It is very important to take into consideration that the upside profits available in commodity trading has an equal downside risk, unless you put in stops and honor them.

The author does a good job familiarizing the readers with the slang, terms, and psychology used within commodity trading. This is a great book for new traders that want to begin trading commodities. I highly recommend this book as the first book that traders read if they are interested in trading in the commodity market. I believe after reading this book you'll have enough information to decide if commodity trading is something you want to pursue.

Nice introduction for a confusing topic

I'm a complete commodities novice. I got this book because I was curious about the subject and wanted to know more about how it all worked and explore the possibility of engaging in some profit-seeking transactions.

The author does a great job of explaining what is considered a commodity, how the whole trading system works, and what sort of pitfalls to look out for in terms of the market itself and also within your own psychology. The book certainly provides enough information to get started with a good understanding of the market, of what to look for in a broker, and some basic strategies to use but of course everything falls short of actual experience with real transactions. At least this book provides the background needed to get an intelligent start rather than heading in on the advice of friends, etc.

That said, after reading this book I've concluded that the commodities market is not for me as it doesn't suit my nature or level of risk tolerance. If nothing else, this book was valuable and beneficial to help me arrive at that conclusion. I attribute that to the objective nature from which it is written, as opposed to another book that might have a "get rich with commodities" theme to it that doesn't present all the sides or issues.
