A Cat's Chance in Hell (Hellcat Series Book 1), by Sharon Hannaford

Full length novel (paperback version, 406 pages).

If the Demon Master gets his way the City is about to become Hell on Earth.

Gabi has some extraordinary talents. Some might call them supernatural, but for her they’re just part of everyday life. What she knows about the supernatural would give most humans nightmares forever. Ridding the streets of bad-ass creatures of the night is Gabi’s other job. Taking up the mantle of her father’s legacy, she is a Hunter for the Societas Malus Venatori. The first female ever bestowed the title. Her day job is a little less dangerous. Most of the time.

Being ambushed and kidnapped by the sinfully sexy Master Vampire of the City should have been just another night on the job, except for the fact that Julius has other plans for her. When he reveals that his nemesis wants control of the City and has plans to fill it with Demons from the Etherworld, creating an army of Ghouls and turning humans into nothing more than cattle to feed his Clan, Gabi must choose her path. She must decide whether to join with Julius in a stand against the Demon Master or flee the City with her friends and family, leaving the Vampires to wage their own war and the rest of the residents to their fate.

But it’s not in Gabi’s nature to back down from a fight, no matter how impossible the odds. As the Malus Venatori prepare for war, Gabi finds herself pulled deeper into Julius’s world and she makes some disturbing discoveries about her unusual supernatural abilities. Her existence might just be the answer to a mystery as old as the Vampire race. Even more unsettling than that is her undeniable attraction to Julius and the taste of his blood. But before she can come to terms with her conflicting desires they must all survive the Demon onslaught and find a way to safeguard the truth of her heritage.

While the supernatural bad guys know her as Angeli Morte, her friends call her Hellcat!

If you like your heroine smart, sassy and absolutely kick-ass and your Vampire hero sexy as sin and twice as dangerous you’re going to love the Hellcat Series.

Oh wow- this was bad
By Stormy
Two chapters into the book and it was very clear how insubstantial this book is. I remind myself that I am trying to be fair.

Her main character is sassy like a 15 year old with a god complex (nobody likes that) and her leading man is as verbose and uncomplicated as that 15 year old's boyfriend. Their personalities are milky-thin and boring- no sort of character development. The author's descriptions are flaccid and brief.

I too am a fan of the early Anita Blake series and to compare this to it is like comparing a razor scooter to a Shelby Mustang. Nice try.

Wish I had tried to borrow from the library first. Please don't buy this book- you will never get those four dollars back.

I am personally insulted that such a terrible book dares to exist
By jaruszka
I find it HIGHLY suspect that such a terribly-written book has a 4.4 rating on Amazon.com.

One of the other reviewers mentioned this same suspicion, but I chose to ignore what appeared to be the one bad review and go with the majority. But I should have listened. What a God-awful book. I can't see any reason whatsoever to like this book, and this is strange coming from me, because I usually like pretty much anything readable and moderately entertaining. I have never, ever left a book review before, but I feel so cheated out of my $3.99 because of reviews that appear to be written by friends of the author that I want to give you my substantially more critical review. Then the choice is yours if you choose to waste your money...you can't say I didn't warn you.

First of all, the author appears to have the grammatical skill of a third-grader. Actually, that's probably insulting to third-graders. I'm not even kidding when I say that the spelling of the main character's name changed spelling for approximately ten pages, then changed back again for the remainder of the book. Ellipses have 3 periods, not eight, not nine, and not (in one exceptional case) sixteen. "Their" is not the same thing as "there" or "they're". No, you cannot use them interchangeably. Normally I can overlook things like this, because most e-books these days seem to have at least a few minor editing issues, but in this waste of my money and kindle space, the errors are literally on every single page. And often, there are more than one per page. This leads me to believe it's not simply an editing issue; the author just can't write in proper English.

Second, the frequent use of nicknames drove me insane. I don't speak Latin, but I assure you "Angeli Morte" is not Latin for anything. It's not any language for anything, as far as I can tell. So not only is the main character's name (Gabrielle) already nicknamed into "Gabi" (or for a few pages, "Gaby"), she is also "Angeli Morte". And also "Hellcat". And then towards the end of the book, also "Lea". I found all of this annoying and frankly, incredibly lame. Who needs FOUR nicknames, each more lame than the last?

Third, was this book published by Starbucks?! I don't know if the author ever went more than two pages EVER without using the word "coffee". It drove me absolutely insane. Why is it so important to mention that the characters love coffee, want coffee, need coffee, are making coffee? It was another aspect of this book that was highly distracting because its frequent use became so annoying.

Fourth, the storyline was boring, slow-moving, and had a cop-out ending. I can normally read a book in a matter of days, and this one took me nearly a month because I found myself not actually wanting to read it. I didn't care about the characters or what happened to them. The story was incredibly predictable, and (possible mild spoiler here) the "climax" of the story only took about two pages. A lot of slow, boring, grammatically-incorrect build up for a whole lot of nothing. I guess this is the most important aspect of my review. Maybe, unlike me, you can get by the ridiculously frequent grammatical errors and annoying wording. But this book didn't even have an entertaining story to back it up. Everything about it was predictable, slow, and uninteresting.

Fifth, a lot of people have mentioned they liked the strong Anita Blake-eque character of Gabrielle/Gabi/Gaby/Hellcat/Angeli Morte/Lea. To even compare this character to Anita Blake (and I must note I am a fan of the first few Anita Blake books) kind of makes me want to vomit. Gabi seemed like an incredibly stereotypical vampire slayer and really didn't bring anything new to the genre.

Sixth and lastly (well, technically I have way more, but I will spare you because I think my point is made), this book had a very, VERY graphic sex scene. Not that I am particularly opposed to that, but I thought I should warn you. Very descriptive, and although the fact that it happened at all was predictable, the way it was written was unexpectedly detailed. It was also pretty pointless in general. Sex for the sake of sex I guess, which I've always found kind of weird in books in general. Anyway, it was absolutely an 18+ moment in case anyone is wondering about suitability for YA audiences.

And there you have it. Hopefully this review allows you to grasp how infuriating I find the existence of this book and the fact that I paid ACTUAL MONEY for it. You are welcome to give it a go if you want, but since there are so many (in my opinion) undeserved 5-star reviews on here, I only thought it fair that potential readers get an opposing opinion.

So yes. In closing, RUN. DO THE INTERNET EQUIVALENT OF RUNNING FAR, FAR AWAY.

First in series
By E.P. McLean
A very rough book with little to recommend it. Gabi is a hunter for a group policing supernaturals. Must deal with an upsurge in demons with an evil vampire leading the demons. Frankly very formula. Nothing new or original. The writing is rough with often poor transitions beween scenes. I had to reread one twice before I realized that no there wasn't something missing. The romance with the good vampire is poorly setup and frankly unbelievable. There are some good bones here and I observe the series has grown to six books. Clearly someone likes it. I have better things to do.
