Thought-Provoking, Politically Incorrect Analysis

In one of the interviews that serve as interludes between the chapters of his book, Will Durant says he started his career as a liberal and became more & more conservative during his fifty year career as a historian. If he was a conservative, he was a rather liberal one. Some of the ideas he voices would be anathema to conservatives. E.g. Wealth concentrated into fewer and fewer hands should be redistributed to the have nots. Liberals on the other hand, would be distressed by other of his views. E.g. Once the wealth gets redistributed, government should not attempt to prevent the talented and industrious from re-accumulating it.

The paradox is not really paradoxical at all. Obscene wealth in the hands of a very few causes unrest (and eventually revolution) among the obscenely poor. On the other hand, if industry and talent are not rewarded, culture stagnates. Durant gives the fall of the Roman Republic as an example of an obscenely rich aristocracy committing political suicide by refusing to peacefully redistribute some of their wealth to the poor. The economic stagnation of Communist East Europe serves as an example of what happens when you stop the natural flow of wealth back to the talented and industrious.

Durant makes some statements that would get him lynched in the 21st Century American media. E.g. "Only those who are below average really want equality."

Durant is probably most accurately classified as an agnostic, but he says that on balance, religion has done far more good than harm for civilization. Durant contends that civilizations and cultures decline and die when they lose their moral compass. And they lose their moral compass when they lose their religion. Simply put, those contemplating crime are more likely to be detered by the wrath of God than the long arm of the law.

Durant voices many other thought-provoking opinions. You may not agree with everything he says (his wife doesn't), but you will certainly be stimulated to deep thought by what he says.

I was somewhat amused by the interviews interspersed among the chapters. The reverential awe shown by Durant's interviewer was quite neatly counterbalanced by the sardonic wit of Durant's wife, Ariel. When Durant said something she didn't agree with, she let you know about it and gave excellent reasons for her disagreement. Durant quite wisely did what any intelligent husband would do. He almost always let her have the last word.

The best of the best..

Will and Ariel Durant were to history what Carl Sagan was to science: They breathed life into a subject considered lifeless by too many, and clothed the skeleton of recorded history in a garment rich in colorful detail and vast in perspective. "Lessons Of History" is, in my opinion, the finest 100 page non-fiction book ever written, and represents the capstone and encapsulating work of two authors who gave the world their ten thousand page "Story Of Civilization" over a period of 50 years.
Within this delightful book, one can view the enormous panorama of human civilization as it developed from, and was formed by, the matrices of geography, religion, science, war, and a host of other factors. The Durant's, in a writing style that should have been copyrighted, provide the reader with an engaging view of humanity that few readers will come away from without being touched and awed. To be sure, the Durant's works have had a few (very few) detractors, but they were almost entirely high-browed academics in narrow research areas who most likely envied them their commercial success. If I could give this synopsis of 100 centuries of history more than 5 stars I'd do it in a nanosecond.

After finishing the ten volumes of "The History of Civilization", Will and Ariel Durant went back revising and taking notes from their monumental work and produced this insightful essay.
The goal was not to summarize 3,421 years of recorded history in a hundred pages. That would have been silly. The goal was to give some thought to what means to study history; how important is to know our heritage; can we understand our nature and the relations between individuals or between groups or nations just by analysing the past; can the acumulated human experience tell us where are we heading to?
The book was first published in 1968, the worse phase of the cold war, when any perspective of future seemed rather dark and the uncertainties of the period certainly permeate the book.
The book might be considered biased and conservative but that is fair game since the authors warn us about that on the first chapter, "Hesitations". "Historian are not free from bias and prejudice", they say and "most history is guessing, and the rest is prejudice".
The book was written with great care. The sentences are powerful, elegant, concise and insightful. It brings noteworthy quotes and is itself very quotable. A book to be read and appreciated several times.

Ten years ago, Gary Shriver dropped the marital equivalent of an atomic bomb on his wife, Mona. Within hours of being confronted by a co-worker and subsequently admonished by his pastor, Shriver confessed to a three-year adulterous affair with his wife's close friend. As a Christian, Mona, though completely stunned and devastated, hung onto the frailest of threads that their marriage might be saved because Gary was both repentant and wanted reconciliation. Despite their commitment to rebuild their relationship, Mona courageously admitted to less than selfless motives for not seeking an immediate divorce. First, there was pride, as Mona writes that she was proud of their marriage. Second, there was more pride, as she feared people would view her very likable husband as the "better one" in the marriage, thus understanding or even excusing Gary's infidelity. Finally, she hadn't anywhere to go. In characteristic fashion, the Shrivers describe their marital journey before, during and after the affair in brutally transparent diary-like essays. They tell of their decisions, their grief and their eventual healing, found not so much within the confines of the church but from what they believed was God's own merciful hand. Recommended for betrayed Christian spouses

Earlier this year, I discovered that my wife had been unfaithful to me while I was mobilized for duty in Afghanistan. To make matters worse, the man she had an affair with is a member of her church. With nowhere to turn after the affair was revealed, I discovered this book and found it very helpful. Because of the facts surrounding my particular experience, Unfaithful: Rebuilding Trust After Infidelity had some good points to make about how the born-again church interacts with the faithful spouse, the unfaithful spouse and the lover, since Gary's and Mona's experience with the affair and its consequences is written from an evangelical perspective and Gary's "other woman" was also a member of their church. However, because I am not a Christian and therefore not a member of my wife and her lover's congregation (Assembl�ia de Deus), some parts of the book were not applicable to me, particularly the parts that quoted and interpreted scriptural passages. And, although the book is excellent at describing the principals' emotions, it is a little short on how trust is actually rebuilt after an affair. It also jumps around in time, which weakens the book's underlying promise of demonstrating how trust is rebuilt after an affair.

But overall, for those betrayed spouses going through this very painful experience, particularly Christian spouses, this is a good book to read. Some of the most important points the book brings out are:

* Although you may not have been the ideal spouse, nothing ever justifies your spouse having an affair (p 72).

* The possibility of an affair frequently begins with the unfaithful spouse's anger at the faithful spouse (p 76).

* Absolute honesty from the unfaithful spouse is essential to rebuilding trust, even though short-term it causes more hurt (pp 88, 90, 136). Only with a proven track record of honesty over time can trust be rebuilt.

* The ability to deceive -- lie convincingly -- is a huge part of the destruction an affair causes (pp 95, 115). I know this personally because of the devastating effect my wife's post-affair lying had on me when I confronted her with the name of her lover and accused her of the affair. She looked me right in the eye and said "Juro por Deus que n�o tive um caso com ele" ("I swear to God I didn't have an affair with him"), even though I had just read an IM between the two of them where she had written about what their child would have looked like if she had became pregnant by him ("imagina so...daqui a 9 m�ses nascendo uma/um menino/a com um cabelo mas crespinho e mas moreninho...que gra�a?!!!!").

* A marriage where adultery has occurred is more likely to have adultery occur again, the "oneness" of the marriage having been destroyed (p 97).

* Betrayed spouses should be very careful about the people they tell (p 110).

* Rebuilding trust involves avoiding all situations where there can be even a hint of deception (p 129) and requires having the unfaithful spouse answer any question the faithful spouse asks (p 136).

* If you're the betrayed spouse, and you're bored with thinking about or talking about the affair, then you've reached an important milestone to recovery (p 138).

* It is normal to want to know every detail possible about the affair -- dates, times, clothes, locations, emotions (p 140).

* To prevent a recurrence of an affair, if you're a married man, never be alone with a woman; if you're a married woman, never be alone with a man (pp 193-194). If only my wife had followed this advice from the beginning!

* "Forgiveness is not trust. These are two separate issues" (p 159). Personally, I think can eventually forgive my wife, since I too have felt the desire to cheat. Even though I've never acted on that desire, I've been much more receptive to it than having it be a simple passing thought. As for regaining my trust -- that is another matter and will take years.

I am normal for feeling this way!

This is a great book about a couple who have been through what my husband and I are currently going through. They describe in detail their feelings at the time of the discloser of the affair. I could relate to her feelings and share them better with my husband and he could do the same for me. We were able to open up more with each other. Someone else has been there and survived - there is hope!

Excellent book that does not blame the faithful

My husband and I loved this book. It was the first book that I reviewed and ultimately bought that did not blame the faithful. This book dealt with the realities of what happens in the aftermath. It helps those freshly in it to understand what is happening and what can potentially happen when you decide to reconcile. Some of the suggestions we did not use because they just didn't work for us but maybe they can work for you. If you want a non-clinical, first hand account of how to deal with or approach the adultery from a couple who were involved in church that does not beat you over the head, and is sensitive to challenges of rebuilding, this is definitely the book to read.

A hostile expression of supersessionism.

Ateek is one of the world's most popular liberation theologians. Sadly, his view of liberation ends with Exodus and does not include the rest of the Pentateuch, which details how God starts holding ancient Israelites accountable – even during their time in the wilderness. Dennis T. Olson highlights this issue in his commentary on Numbers:

“Before Sinai, Israel was like a newly adopted child who did not yet know the rules of the household. God, the divine Parent, bent over backwards to satisfy the legitimate needs of an Israel immediately out of Egypt. But by the time we reach Numbers, the people of Israel know their responsibilities in the law and the commandments. Israel must take responsibility and is answerable for its relationship to God.”

Nowhere in Justice and Only Justice does Ateek level any expectations at the Palestinian people. Instead he directs his condemnations at Israel and Jews.

theologically astute

atik is both gentle and forceful. his arguments and old testament understanding are *very* biblically and historically grounded. as a christian who has spent a lot of time studying the bible, i find that atik has done an amazing job laying out the groundwork for a very revolutionary liberation theology.
theologically, atik *is not* a premillenialist in his interpretation in hermeneutics (and eschatology, as other essays he's written have shown) so, if one is a premillenialist (which is a very faulty, in my opinion, theological standpoint since it depends on a eurocentric understanding of scripture which was created at the turn of the 20th century and originally dismissed as "heresy")one will not take to kindly to atik's book.
ideologically, the zionist "christian" will confuse atik's understanding of christ as a palestinian. as biblical anthropologists have pointed out, the idea of "jew" as a race did not exist during christ's time. there was only the jewish religion and the national boundaries of Palestine where this religious culture dominated at the time. the racial ideas of "palestinian" and "jew" did not emerge until much later and were only galvanized as a binary in 1948. atik is referring to this historical fact.
the words are wise and compelling. atik has done a lot of research and has grounded everything with a profound understanding of the bible.

Unlike the first reviewer of this book, I am impressed by the author's ability to forgive the occupiers of his native land. After describing the impact of the establisment of Israel and the follow on occupation of Palestinian lands (1967) from a personal perspective (his family was expelled from their home with no notice by the Israeli Army), he tries to find a way for Palestian Christians to understand the situation from a non-literal Biblical perspective.
If more Americans read books like this, we might have a better understanding of what is really happening in the Middle East. Peace will never come until the United States and Israel stand in the shoes of the Palestinians and accept the fact that a huge injustice continues against the Palestinians. Likewise the Palestinians must come to terms with the reality of the modern Israeli State and accept the fact that Israel exists today because of the Holocaust and the resulting sympathy for a Jewish State. This is a position Naim Stifan Ateek proposes.
This is an excellent read, although sometimes a bit depressing.

I was at the bookstore earlier today, and I picked this book up and flipped to a random page, but as soon as I read a sentence that consisted of one of the characters wearing a juicy courture outfit, I immediately put it down. And to make matters worse, I've heard that the pants size that Jessica and Elizabeth wear has gone from a perfect size 6, to a perfect size 4. Are you serious? Nice way to add to the growing issue of teenage body issues.

I have been a fan of The Sweet Valley series ever since I was a little girl, and have since then collected a majority of books from the several series that the world of Sweet Valley consists of. So ill say, I was excited when I heard that they'd be reprinting the books with new covers because I saw it as an opportunity for a new generation of sweet valley fans to discover these wonderful books. But I didn't realize that they'd also be changing some of the things in the book. I mean I can understand why they'd want to update some of the things such as the fashions and the use of cell phones, because I know things like that will appeal to todays audience. But still.

The next time I feel like re-entering the world of Sweet Valley, ill just stick to the old fashioned version and pick up one of the books off of my bookshelf.

No substitute for the original.

I have been a long-time of this wonderfully crack-tastic series. Be warned as the other reviewer stated some of the changes they made are somewhat bizarre. A burger joint is changed to a Mexican restaurant, a character's clothing style and band name are changed...that however is nothing compared to the insidious fate handed down to slutty rich boy Bruce Patman. His beloved Porsche has been traded in for a CADDY(!?)
The name brands are a bit ridiculous, I feel and saying all this I will tell you that I cannot wait for the other books come out, so I can compare/contrast with my "old skool" collection.
Here's the plot of the book: Jessica wants to be prom queen. She finds out her twin sister's BFF has a druggie past and spills the beans to Enid's jealous boytoy, Ronnie.
There's also something about Jessica's BFF tormenting a French teacher because the teacher is dating her father.
W#hile Sweet Valley High books are not at all deep, they are quite fun.
I would highly recommend getting the originals before starting the reissues

The old ones were so much better

As a fan of the original books, I was disappointed. Wow, could they make it any more obvious that this is 2008? Way too many pop culture references, and unrealistic dialogue. The real Enid Rollins would NOT be wearing Juicy Couture, that is for sure. Also, the scene where Enid tells Liz she was arrested and paralyzed a 5 year old is way too dramatic and I don't feel that it's real. They could have just written it so she got in an accident, blah blah blah. EVERY page they have to make a reference to a magazine, TV show, band, or fashion label that is commonplace today.

Oh, and for those of you complaining about how the twins went from size 6 to a size 4: In case you have been living under a rock, clothing sizes are DRASTICALLY different than they were in the 80's/90's. What used to be a size 6 is the same size as a 4 or a 2, nowadays. So you should feel lucky that the author didn't write them as a size 2 or zero. Before they redid clothing sizes to make women feel better about themselves, I was a size 6, now I struggle to fill out a size 2 pair of jeans.

And what about issues that real teens face today? Like sex and drugs? Those are hardly mentioned.

I miss the old Sweet Valley...

Really love this particular version for the children

Really love this particular version for the children. Finally a Quran that is not translated with very difficult english and my child enjoys it very much. This was assigned to her by the Sunday School teacher and i like it very much as well.

Enlightening look at the difficulties of obtaining a Visa

I appreciate the notion of immigrants coming to this country and going through the struggles of obtaining their work visa via legal means. It’s funny—it seems that those who wish to do things legally, and with much to offer (such has education and work qualifications) have a much more difficult time than those who decide to simply enter the country illegally. But I’m not here to get on a soapbox, but to review this excellent book by R.V. Kuppa. THE DARK SIDE OF H1B VISA details the repercussions one can face when working on a H1B work visa and all the issues he had to face while he was in the US. He also gives details regarding how Americans are affected by those who choose to present fake work visas.

This book is very well-written and heartfelt, and I really appreciated the plight of Kuppa and other like him who only wish to come here for opportunities that they would not have in their native countries. Unfortunately, there seems to be a lot of drawbacks to entering this country from somewhere other than just South of us. Kuppa discusses these issues—from being targeted to being audited to being unable to work for extended amounts of time due to the hoops one must jump through to obtain a H1B work visa.

Informative for anyone who is considering coming to the US or who is interested in what immigrant must do to come here LEGALLY for work. It’s obviously quite a task and I appreciate anyone who gets through it.

A very interesting story!

I don't have any experiences about obtaining American Visas, but the way the book describes the embassy procedure reminded me of some members of my family who went through all the procedures to obtain a residence visa to the US, and then later on, a Green Card. The positive side is that the narrator obtained his student visa very easily, which he was really lucky, because it is also a difficult procedure to obtain a student visa! In this book, the author shows you all the difficulties one goes through in order to get another type of visa, the H1B, which will allow one to stay longer, and then to work normally. He describes how many employers take advantage of its employees, without paying them, etc...which I have seen happening in many countries, not only the US! Anyway, I really enjoyed reading this book, and I look forward to read more books written by Kuppa!

It took me a while to finish this good book. I have been amazed by how the author wrote this book, the flow of the story and its concept. To be living the "american dream" is something that most people around the world would like to have. Will it be easy or full of struggles? This book gives its readers ideas on what can happen and what to expect when you are about to enter US when you're from a different country. It has been a great pleasure getting to know experiences from the protagonist of the story of what H1B visa is all about. To have a better opportunity in life, that's what we all wanted. But can you surpass all the challenges? That's the big question. Thank you Raj, for sharing a nice story like this. I will surely recommend this book to my friends and to people who will benefit from it.
