REAL PLACE, REAL MAGIC.

Glastonbury: the most mysterious town in the UK, linked for centuries with King Arthur and the Holy Grail. And something else... something darker.

In this novel (originally published under the name Thom Madley and aimed at a young-adult audience) thirteen year old Marco is dumped in Glasto to spend the summer with his old-hippy grandparents, Woolly and Nancy. He thinks the town’s weird history is rubbish, until Woolly presents him with a pendulum and shows him how to dowse. And then it gets really strange.

Meanwhile, another newcomer, the new curate’s daughter, Rosa, is tormented by the presence of an old monk from the Abbey, which backs on to her bedroom. A toxic darkness is gathering again over the ancient Isle of Avalon.

Marco’s Pendulum and its sequel, Marco and the Blade of Night will introduce a new generation to Phil Rickman... as well as enlightening adult readers of The Chalice about what happens next in the haunted streets and the Abbey ruins... and on the enchanted slopes of the enigmatic Glastonbury Tor.

a youthful version of the same struggles that Merrily faces
By Ann D
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to book 2. Classic story of young people discovering what is special about them and then tapping into those newly discovered qualities to defeat evil (and the power of greed) against all odds and interfering adults and young bullies. But the characters here, Marco and Rosa, are quirky and delightfully engaging, and feel very real and natural. Wish you would add more to this series, Mr. Rickman.

Enjoyable read for lovers of The Chalice
By Desert Mambo
I read this because I really enjoyed Rickman's The Chalice, and since this was set in his version of Glastonbury, I decided I couldn't give it a miss (plus I was able to borrow it for free with Amazon prime! Yay!) I enjoyed it--it picked up the story about 9 years later, and some of the same characters appeared, including another Wooly (the original Wooly's brother). Good story, with many of the same themes as The Chalice, yes,the dark grail features in the story (though the scary black bus is just mentioned).

It's also an interesting tale of two young people dealing with psychic gifts.

It was meant as a young adult novel, so it lacks a bit of the length and complexity I enjoyed so much in the Chalice, but that's to be expected. Also, I found it had a bit too much background info. on Glastonbury, the Grail, etc. Perhaps if I didn't know any of this already, I would have simply appreciated it; I don't know. But I skimmed a bit in those parts!

If you're a fan of Rickman's early work, you should absolutely read this. I have the next Marco book to read too. And I also imagine this might be a good read for YA readers (of any age) who enjoy creepy stories with well developed characters. The dialogue in particular was well done.

Ejoyable early Rickman
By Sue Birch
I'm a big fan of the Merrily series, and was it the mood for some Rickman, so read this early story. It would be good entry point for anyone who hasn't read this author before. The central characters are young teens and alternative lifestyle grandparents in Glastonbury. I liked the story enough to read book 2, and think it's a shame there is no book 3. Although, I've gone back earlier in
Rickman's career and am reading The Chalice, which is an inadvertent prequel for me.
The story is typical Phil Rickman style, that juxtaposition between Christian and Pagan, good and evil, villages vs incomers; with supernatural overtones. I always enjoy the history lessons in Rickman's books which give the stories depth. I can relate to the characters and they feel like real people in our contemporary world.
I would recommend this book and it's sequel to age group +13 plus, who enjoys contemporary, supernatural mystery stories.
