Jan Masaoka is a leading writer and thinker on nonprofit organizations and has decades of experience consulting to nonprofits in board work, finance, and strategy. She is currently the director and editor-in-chief of Blue Avocado, an influential online nonprofit magazine with 62,000 subscribers. She was the executive director for 14 years at CompassPoint Nonprofit Services, a national consulting and training firm for nonprofits based in San Francisco and Silicon Valley. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

About the Author

Deborah Licht is a professor of psychology at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She has over two decades of teaching and research experience in a variety of settings, ranging from a small private university in the midwest to a large public university in Copenhagen, Denmark. She has taught introductory psychology, psychology of the workplace, abnormal psychology, the history of psychology, child development, and elementary statistics. She has experience in traditional, online, and hybrid courses, and is particularly inspired by first-generation college students who turn to community colleges to pursue their education. She received a BS in psychology from Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio; an MS in clinical psychology from the University of Dayton; and a PhD in psychology (experimental psychopathology) from Harvard University. She continues to be interested in research on causal beliefs and their influence on behavior, particularly in relation to how college students think about their successes and failures as they pursue their degrees.

Misty Hull is a professor of psychology at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She has taught a range of psychology courses at Pikes Peak Community College, including introductory psychology, human sexuality, and social psychology in a variety of delivery formats (traditional, online, and hybrid). Her love of teaching comes through in her dedication to mentoring new and part-time faculty in the teaching of psychology. She received her BS in human development and family studies from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, and an MA in professional counseling at Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, Colorado. She has served in a variety of administrative roles at Pikes Peak Community College, including interim associate dean, and coordinator of the Student Crisis Counseling Office. In addition, she has helped to facilitate the state system s approach to teaching psychology, as the state psychology discipline chair of the Colorado Community College System from 2002 to 2010. One of her many professional interests is research on the impact of student persistence in higher education.

Coco Ballantyne is a New York based journalist and science writer with a special interest in psychology. Before joining forces with Misty Hull and Deborah Licht to write Scientific American: Psychology and Scientific American: Presenting Psychology, Coco worked as a reporter for Scientific American online, covering the health, medicine, and neuroscience beats. She has also written for Discover magazine and Nature Medicine. Coco earned an MS from Columbia University School of Journalism, where she received a Horgan Prize for Excellence in Critical Science Writing. Prior to her journalistic career, Coco worked as a teacher and tutor, helping high school and college students prepare for standardized tests such as the SAT, GRE, and MCAT. She also worked as a physics and math teacher at Eastside College Preparatory School in East Palo Alto, California, and as a Human Biology course associate at Stanford University, where she earned a BA in human biology."

Amazing Modern Introduction to Psychology

Great general introduction for psychology.

Note that the "half-life" for psychology books are about 5 years. If you can get a cheaper copy online, I'd recommend it.
However, this does not meet you shouldn't keep it. This is a very valuable book. It answers some of the basic questions we as adults don't generally know such as:

- How do we see, hear, feel, or taste?
- What is consciousness in the views of different perspectives of psychology?
- What are the differences of fields of psychology.

Overall, I loved this book. It made for a great read.

NOTE: If you do choose to get this book and would like to keep it, DO NOT get the folder version. The pages are fragile and will rip out of your binder very easily.

Psychology made easy

I will never buy a handheld book again. This kinda version on my tablet is amazing. With the flexible dates I pay for what I use. I can highlight and make notes and then make flash cards out of the notes and highlight items in seconds. It also had this xray thing that dissects the page you're on and tells you what the key points are. Which is great for me since when I skim I don't capture any information. So awesome! Oh yea, and the book it's self I'd good to.

An Amusing and Refreshing Memoir!

A perfect read for a lighthearted day! The author is very witty and relatable, and I enjoyed his feelgood outlook on life's often over-dramatized dating situations. Humorous, upbeat. Not vulgar or disrespectful - a pleasurable read for 20-somethings, 80-somethings, or anything in between (or above!). This book helped me reflect on my own past relationships, see them in a lighter way, and release some of the negative feelings I had pent up regarding my exes. Much appreciated! I never would have gotten there if it weren't for Rothman's example. Would recommend for a cheery, easy read.

Wisdom Interwoven in a funny and honest book!

While happily married, this book’s catchy title caught my eye while scanning alumni blurbs in a recent University of Denver (DU) magazine. I didn’t know the author, Barry Rothman, but was curious what had compelled a lawyer to write about relationships. On a whim, I ordered it. Count me as one happy customer. My only regret is that his book wasn’t available 35 years ago when I began dating.
An easy read, I consumed it in one evening. This was due, in part, to its brevity but mostly because it’s an entertaining book. Rothman details his relationships with the opposite sex starting in grammar school. The 50-something former practicing attorney must be a charmer since he’s certainly dated a multitude of successful and fetching women from diverse backgrounds.
In summarizing each relationship, the author is brutally honest and humorous in assessing the faults of his dates—and himself. Some of the quotes he unearthed are priceless (Tony Curtis: “I could never date anyone old enough to be my wife,” or Groucho Marx’s comment about a talkative lady, “You must have been vaccinated with a phonograph needle”). One sense’s right away that some connections will be train wrecks. Many matches, however, are to varying degrees compatible yet Rothman never quite finds his kindred spirit.
What elevates Ginger or Mary Ann above simply a fun read, though, are Rothman’s dating suggestions. These insights, while not always groundbreaking, are valuable wisdom. He makes compelling arguments on topics that include dating within your own “social milieu,” long distance relationships, lost opportunities, holiday romances, and “Stage Door Johnnys.” Dating is challenging under the best circumstances but reading Rothman’s book will make it a more enriching, less fraught experience especially for men.
The author deserves kudos for bravely sharing his relationship history. Here’s hoping that Rothman finds his soulmate as a reward; he’s certainly deserving after some of his experiences detailed in Ginger or Mary Ann. P.S. SPOILER ALERT: Barry says always pick Mary Ann…but I knew that!

Fantastic Fun & Funny

This book is Great! It is all about choosing to see life, (regardless of the ups or downs), in a fun way. The author is hilaroius and brings the reader along for a joy ride full of laughter, that you don't want to end. You get to go along with him and relive both wonderful and awkward situations that everybody can relate to. I love this book and HIGHLY recommend it for anybody who is looking for a little departure from the mundane.
