Greek Hoplite 480-323 BC (Warrior), by Nicholas Sekunda

The Greek hoplite, the archetypal spear-armed warrior, is perhaps the most prevalent figure in our view of the 'Golden Age' of Ancient Greek civilisation. It was during this period that the state began to take greater responsibility for military organisation, and the arming and equipping of its citizens. From the victory at Marathon over Darius of Persia (490 BC), through bitter inter-state warfare, to the rise of Philip of Macedonia and his son Alexander the Great, the hoplite soldier was in the front-line. This title narrates the life and experiences of the common Greek warrior, how he was recruited, trained and fought, and also looks in detail at how his weapons, armour, shields and helmets developed in the course of time.

The citizen soldier, his role in the classical Greek warfare
By Eduardo J. Tellez A
What I like about the books of Nick Sekunda is that he always try to make it easy for the common guy, the text is not too academic and not dry like other Osprey Writers, I like the way he put the source, when a author point out the sources he is given you a great help, I always like to start with a book which can guide to another great source of the same theme.
In this book we follow the life common Hoplite and experiences Training,Motivation and Preparation for the Hoplite Battle, the author provides full detail on what they wore, how they fought, and how their function fitted into the structure of Greek society.
We also can see the how his weapons, armour, shields and helmets developed in the course of time, the development of the arms and armour from the pilo helmet to the Phrygian Helmet with 10 fabulous pieces of artwork from Adam Hook with a lot of black and white photos.
The book belongs on every classicist's shelf or fan of the Armours, this is what I enjoy the most of this books the description of the equipment wore by the typical soldier that dominated the classical Greek warfare, you would learn a lot,the volume presents the hoplite during the classical era from the Battle of Salamis to the death of Alexander the Great as clearly as can be imagined.
To learn more about the Warfare in the Classical Period or the Arms and Armours of the Hoplite you should star with the book of "Arms and Armor of the Greeks" by Anthony, M. Snodgrass another great writer is Peter Connolly check "Greece and Rome at War" many illustration and also "Warfare in the Classical World" by John Gibson Warry, "The Wars of the Ancient Greeks" by Victor Davis Hanson(Cassell History of Warfare series)"Thermopylae:The Battle for the West" by Ernle Bradford is an accessible narrative, also give a inside the Greek world and the warfare but if you want more of the Spartan,Hoplite and the Hot Gates check "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield is a novel but with a lot of detail, from the author of the book there are many titles always from Osprey Marathon 490 BC(Campaign 108)is very useful.

Nice, compact introduction to the topic
By A Customer
I used this volume as a reference for painting plastic Greek figures (Italieri). The color plates are great and confirmed the accuracy of the figures. The text flows smoothly and is informative. Overall, this is a nice first reference.

Flawless
By Napoleon Bonaparte
Nicholas Sekunda has produced a masterpiece with "Greek Hoplite". He goes into excellent detail describing the training of hoplites, their weapons and equipment, their organization on campaign, and their battle tactics. He also makes excellent use of primary sources, quoting Xenophon, Plutarch, and even the Greek tragedian Aeschylus. The colour plates are also vividly drawn. I honestly cannot think of anything bad to say about this book.

Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (Routledge Classics), by Ludwig Wittgenstein

Perhaps the most important work of philosophy written in the twentieth century, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus was the only philosophical work that Ludwig Wittgenstein published during his lifetime. Written in short, carefully numbered paragraphs of extreme brilliance, it captured the imagination of a generation of philosophers. For Wittgenstein, logic was something we use to conquer a reality which is in itself both elusive and unobtainable. He famously summarized the book in the following words: 'What can be said at all can be said clearly; and what we cannot talk about we must pass over in silence.' David Pears and Brian McGuinness received the highest praise for their meticulous translation. The work is prefaced by Bertrand Russell's original introduction to the first English edition.

Review
"Wittgenstein, in his preface, tells us that his book is not a textbook, and that its object will be attained if there is one person who reads it with understanding and to whom it affords pleasure. We think there are many persons who will read it with understanding and enjoy it. The treatise is clear and lucid. The author is continually arresting us with new and striking thoughts, and he closes on a note of mystical exaltation."
-The Times Literary Supplement
""Tractatus is one of the fundamental texts of twentieth-century philosophy - short, bold, cryptic, and remarkable in its power to stir the imagination of philosophers and non-philosophers alike."
-Michael Frayn

Worst editing in history
By ron bell
Do not buy this edition! The editing is so bad that there are blatant typos in nearly every entry of Wittgenstein's text. There are no notes by an editor or translator, so the reader has no idea who is responsible for this ridiculous butchery of the text. I'm talking about the most basic proofreading here, not about interpretations of the text (I don't read German, so I can't comment about that). For example: " If they world had no substance, then whether a proposition had sense would depend on whether another proposition was true (2.0211)." They world? "It is obvious that an imagined world, however difference it may be from the real one . . .(2.022)" -- this kind of thing can't help but distract the reader from the meaning. These are just 2 of scores of examples. Those were on the same page, and you find them on every page. 7 Treasures Publications seems to be some kind of fly-by-night garage publisher; this is the crudest, most unprofessional publication I've ever seen.

A Masterpiece in Logic and Philosophy
By Davina
This book is beautiful. Numbered by propositions, from "1. The world is all that is the case" to "7. Whereof one cannot speak, one must be silent" this book forces one to think deeply about language, logic, and their connection to reality. Wittgenstein discusses thoughts as pictures, with the truth/falsity arising in how that picture compares to reality. He also creates truth tables. What is not to love? One concern may be that in the latter half of the book, there is some logical notation that may be difficult to decipher without prior training, but even without prior training, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is an intellectual feast. This is one of the most important books of the 20th century, and I highly recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in logic or philosophy.

A modern Classic
By Reader From Aurora
Originally published in 1921 Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is arguably the most influential piece of twentieth century philosophical writing. This edition contains the well respected 1961 Pears and McGuinness translation as well as the introduction to the original English edition by Bertrand Russell. I offer the following comments for potential readers.

Despite its unquestioned historical significance the Tractatus is not necessarily a good entry point into Wittgenstein's thought. Arguably, if one were to read it not aware of the context within it which it was written it might seem pedantic and tedious - it is largely focused on addressing logico-linguistic questions prevalent at the outset of the twentieth century. From my perspective, an understanding of Frege and Russell is essential to appreciating the Tractatus. In particular it is important to have an appreciation for Frege's notions of concept, and his views on sense and reference; Whereas, Russell's approach to names and descriptions is also important.

Although I appreciate Wittgenstein's work in the fields of language and logic I think his influence on modern philosophy has not been entirely positive. For instance it could be argued that the Logical-Positivist movement stemming from Wittgenstein's early work steered philosophical discussion into and sterile and uninteresting period where large metaphysical questions were deemed out of bonds (undoubtedly some would consider this a good thing).

Overall, the Tractatus is a classic in modern philosophy - an important read for all serious students. For non-Wittgenstein enthusiasts, however, it can be a difficult read in early twentieth century analytic philosophy.

Undisputed Truth, by Mike Tyson, Larry Sloman

A bare-knuckled, tell-all memoir from Mike Tyson, the onetime heavyweight champion of the world—and a legend both in and out of the ring.

Philosopher, Broadway headliner, fighter, felon—Mike Tyson has defied stereotypes, expectations, and a lot of conventional wisdom during his three decades in the public eye. Bullied as a boy in the toughest, poorest neighborhood in Brooklyn, Tyson grew up to become one of the most thrilling and ferocious boxers of all time—and the youngest heavyweight champion ever. But his brilliance in the ring was often compromised by reckless behavior. Years of hard partying, violent fights, and criminal proceedings took their toll: by 2003, Tyson had hit rock bottom, a convicted felon, completely broke, the punch line to a thousand bad late-night jokes. Yet he fought his way back; the man who once admitted being addicted “to everything” regained his success, his dignity, and the love of his family. With a triumphant one-man stage show, his unforgettable performances in the Hangover films, and his newfound happiness and stability as a father and husband, Tyson’s story is an inspiring American original.
Brutally honest, raw, and often hilarious, Tyson chronicles his tumultuous highs and lows in the same sincere, straightforward manner we have come to expect from this legendary athlete. A singular journey from Brooklyn’s ghettos to worldwide fame to notoriety, and, finally, to a tranquil wisdom, Undisputed Truth is not only a great sports memoir but an autobiography for the ages.

From Booklist
Sharing a title with Tyson’s limited-run one-man Broadway show (soon to air on HBO), this outspoken autobiography simultaneously confirms many of our preconceptions about the celebrity boxer and smashes some of them. Although he came out of poverty and family strife, and although he was following a criminal path at a very early age (he was robbing houses when he was still a preteen and sent to a state reformatory at age 12), and although schooling took a backseat to his fighting career (which also started when he was very young), Tyson does not come across as the semiliterate thug he’s so often represented to be. Most readers are familiar with his tumultuous life and career—the bizarre behavior in the ring, the sordid behavior out of it—but what’s most surprising about the book is the introspection and self-awareness displayed by this self-proclaimed “trailer park nigga.” Leaving aside the question of how much of the actual writing was done by coauthor Sloman—who’s collaborated on several other noteworthy books, including a couple with Howard Stern—it’s clear that the voice is Tyson’s: it’s raw and profane but also smart and witty. Different people have different opinions of Tyson, but he seems to know who he is, and he appears to be OK with that. A fascinating and frequently surprising autobiography. --David Pitt

Review
Praise for UNDISPUTED TRUTH

“A masterpiece … grimly tragic on one page, laugh-out-loud funny on the next, and unrelentingly vulgar and foul-mouthed. Reading Tyson's memoir is like watching a Charles Dickens street urchin grow up to join Hunter S. Thompson on a narcotics-filled road trip — with the ensuing antics captured on video by assorted paparazzi.” –Hector Tobar, Los Angeles Times

“Undisputed Truth is raw, powerful and disturbing—a head-spinning take on Mr. Tyson's life…Unlike other sports memoirists, he doesn't pull punches, offering up slashing comments on people who were once close to him. His narrative reminds us of just how far he has come from his rough beginnings, and, in a way, how close he remains to them. He had a punch like a thunderbolt from Zeus, but there have been a lot of big bangers in boxing; Mike Tyson's came with a pulsating story line like few others.” --Gordon Marino, Wall Street Journal

“Parts of [Undisputed Truth] read like a real-life Tarantino movie. Parts read like a Tom Wolfe-ian tour of wildly divergent worlds: from the slums of Brooklyn to the high life in Las Vegas to the isolation of prison…. Mr. Tyson’s idiosyncratic voice comes through clearly on the page here — not just his mix of profane street talk and 12-step recovery language, cinematic descriptions of individual fights and philosophical musings, but also his biting humor and fondness for literary and historical references that run the gamut from Alexandre Dumas to Tolstoy to Lenin to Tennessee Williams…. A genuine effort by a troubled soul to gain some understanding of the long, strange journey that has been his life.” –Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

“A hefty autobiography that might be the most soul baring book of its genre ever written … a fascinating look into a life that up until now had already been well chronicled … It’s raw and profane … but it is also quite funny.”—Associated Press

“Undisputed Truth, which is, without a doubt, one of the grittiest and most harrowing memoirs I’ve ever read.” –Flavorwire

“Most readers are familiar with [Tyson’s] tumultuous life and career—the bizarre behavior in the ring, the sordid behavior out of it—but what’s most surprising about the book is the introspection and self-awareness displayed … it’s raw and profane but also smart and witty … A fascinating and frequently surprising autobiography.”—Booklist
“Undisputed Truth, is the American dream writ large in raw detail: think Citizen Kane scripted by the writing team of The Wire…. [it] has a great American novel feel to it… Tyson could easily be a Tom Wolfe or Norman Mailer creation.” –Austin Collings, New Statesman

“[A] lively mixture of a memoir.” –Joyce Carol Oates, New York Review of Books

“Tyson was ever practised at delivering the early killer blow; and so it is with this gripping and indecently enthralling autobiography….Tyson always had a way with words – although much of the credit for this book must go to his ghostwriter Larry “Ratso” Sloman, who not only makes Tyson’s life read like an Elmore Leonard thriller, but gifts him with considerable self-awareness and a memorably pithy turn of phrase….recounted in gripping, punch-by-punch detail in prose pungent with the reek of blood, sweat and petroleum jelly.” –Mick Brown, The Telegraph (UK)

“Thrilling…addictive…Sloman brings Tyson's voice springing off the page with its often hilarious combo of street and shrink, pimp profanity and the ‘prisony pseudo-intellectual modern mack rap’ of the autodidact.” –Geoff Dyer, The Guardian (UK)

Baddest man on the planet writes the best book of the year
By J. Garner
The day this book was released, I read an excerpt posted somewhere or another wherein Tyson strangles Don King from the back seat of a limousine that King is driving. That sold me - I thought I was going to read a couple hundred pages of Mike Tyson telling insane stories. What I got was immeasurably better.

This book is Mike Tyson's life story, in Mike Tyson's words, as told to a writer. It might not be the undisputed truth, but it is his truth, and it's his entire truth. It is brutally, unforgivingly honest, and while he has few kind words for the likes of King, Robin Givens, and Desiree Washington, no one fares worse in these pages than Tyson himself.

Whatever you may think of Tyson, he is without a doubt one of the most fascinating sports figures of the past hundred years. He's a study in contradictions: a terrifying boxer with a temper that one could charitably describe as "mercurial" and yet he speaks softly, almost effeminately, with a lisp. The man said he was going to eat Lennox Lewis' children and praised Allah in the same sentence. He was paid tens of millions of dollars for fights that often lasted less than one round, and was bankrupt within ten years. Of course this guy's story is going to be great.

But the two episodes in his life that he's most known for, his tumultuous (and allegedly abusive) marriage to Robin Givens, and his rape trial after a night with pageant contestant Desiree Washington gone horribly, irreversibly wrong, aren't glossed over. At all. If anything, he talks about them - the trial in particular - in detail that's simply uncomfortable. And it has to be. If he's to have any absolution, any redemption in the public's eye, he has to be able to tell his side of the story for those who want to hear it, those that wonder if perhaps his in-ring persona was unfairly turned against him.

Undisputed Truth spends many, many chapters on how that persona developed, from both his cruel childhood on the streets of Brooklyn, to his being taught by Cus, the only father figure he'd ever known. Tyson's relationship with Cus is a well-known and oft-romanticized slice of boxing history, and the realization that everything that he learned from his childhood and from Cus that made him the tremendous fighter that he was being precisely what ensured his time at the top was so short and why he was so ill-prepared for life as Iron Mike had to have been painful to come to and write about.

Whether you find Tyson as fascinating as I do, or want to learn more about the man behind the glove (and there's much, much more to him than I expected), or just want to know what in the world he was thinking with that tattoo, you absolutely must read this book. Don't expect 500+ pages of back-patting. All too often, memoirs are just a remembrance of happy times, rough patches smoothed over or omitted entirely. It's refreshing to read someone so well-known write something so unflinchingly honest about himself. This dives headfirst into the realm of absolute self-loathing. However much you might despise Mike Tyson for some of the things he's done in his life, he despises himself so much more for them.

I want to think that this is the time he gets it right. That this is the time he has another chance and doesn't throw it away. That he's able to wipe away a little of the stain from his legacy, to be able to provide for his family, to find some peace. After reading his story, I'm not sure, but I'm rooting for him. Just like the old days.

A non fiction blockbuster!
By Dube
Wow!
Open. Raw. Real. Mike Tyson tells it like it is.
You hear him. Feel him. Totally.
He takes you to the darkest depths of his soul and bares
his demons for all to see. Don't be surprised if you find yourself routing for him the darker the story gets.

What i loved about this book is it's not sugar coated for readers to sympathize with Mike Tyson.
It's told with brutal honesty that somehow still manages to draw you in.
I had withdrawal symptoms every time i put it down.
I just couldn't wait to get back to it.
There's no dull moment from the first word to the last.

I even found myself laughing out loud in some sections because Mike Tyson can pack a humorous punch too.
It's the best biography I've read and I've read many.

Buy it. Read it. It'll stay with you long after you've finished reading it.

Book by Mike Tyson is a great read.
By Iggy
In this autobiography Mike Tyson takes the reader on the grand tour of his life. The book is a good read, and I think I got lucky with it, since this is my 1st boxer's autobiography. I was choosing between Mike's and Jack Johnson's biography and chose Mike's because his name resonates in my own lifetime. There was time that there wasn't a boxer more feared and more glorious than this guy. However, it seems like his own glory and success took a toll on him, and as a result he couldn't cope with the intensity of all that came together with glory.

I was happy to find out things about Mike's early life, that it was hard, sometimes grotesquely hard, as there wasn't any food on the table, and no one except Mike himself to get it.

It was very interesting to find out more about Cus D'Amato and the kind of influence that he exerted on Mike's early training carrier. He compares his mentor to an Ancient Roman, someone like Julius Caesar or Pompeus perhaps someone with an unbending will for victory, and boundlessly wise, but also very paranoid to the point where he is ready to jump anyone coming into close contact with him. For good or for bad, but it is possible that Mike have copied some of these traits and made them his own He was born at a wrong time, where completely overwhelming your adversary for the virtue of glory is considered to say the least "unethical". But they were times, when it was a preferred thing for a gentleman to do, and practice as a life style. The philosophy of overwhelming your opponent on all fronts is synonymous to the all out warfare of the "Art of War" of Sun Tzu, and Miyamoto Musashi's "Five Rings". We also hear the echos of A.V. Suvorov, the greatest of the Russian military commanders. I see Cus (may he rest in peace) as a Condottieri of sort. A general who is all about strategy and all about taking trophies in any form. No trophies - no point to fight.

Mike has had a lot of money in his carrier. He speaks of millions like it is a normal thing, which is hard to understand for many of us who never had even one. He could spend 10's if not 100's of millions like pocket change, just because he had them. Nevertheless, I have to say that he handled a slide into a middle class, and even borderline poverty pretty well, notwithstanding the fact that he was battling his own demons consistently during all of that time, and sometimes the demons were winning...

His relationship with women is full of drama, and according to his own opinion, "I am not a pimp, but a trick", which I think means that he is an open guy and someone who genuinely needs care, but who wanted to play a pimp, like it is his stage persona, as this was the thing to do. Mike is creating an image of a Casanova type who has had dozens upon dozens of women from all walks of life, though he makes a point of not being a good communicator and emphasizing the fact that many women, including his first wife were attracted not to him, but to his accomplishments in the art of boxing, and on stage, perhaps even the amount of money that he possessed at the time and his spending power.

He spent a lot of time in rehabs for his drug addictions, but thankfully to his guardian spirits that he has some really good friends, and some close knit family who stood by him in those very tough times, and helped him to recuperate and go on with his life.

Mr. Tyson's transformation is amazing. I don't watch TV, but I have seen some of his interviews on the Youtube, and it is truly amazing how one can change as a result of his life's experiences plus faith. I salute him, and say "namaste" to the divinity in him.

Other than that, Mike is a Brooklyn guy to the marrow, and places value on the personal conduct and how it relates to his "street" values which include directness, certain brutal honesty about other people's negative traits as well as respect for things material and their accumulation. He is very open-minded about any nationality and any religious affiliation, and has some good things to say about any with which he came into contact during his tumultuous carrier. He is a practicing Muslim, but has close friends who are Catholic, Southern Baptist and Jewish. I was happy that he relates so well to the Eastern Europeans of who I am one. I thought it was funny when he said that "Russia doesn't have the word for balance, it is all about extremes"...It's true.

The book has a lot of good stuff in it and is written with the reverence to the Higher, and it is amazing that one can be so open as to let the others into that complicated world of the Self, a labyrinth that we ALL enter, but far from many of us reach and kill the Minotaur with the help of the Ariadne's thread. But if such a well known public figure can do it, I am sure that we the readers can, too.

Outstanding sourcebook on research and evaluation methods
By A Customer
This handbook is one of the most authoritative references I have found on research and evaluation methods. It is designed for the education or behavioral science researcher, but students of any type of social science research will find much to offer here. It contains some of the best bibliographic references on the subject of research to be found anywhere. If you are a graduate student or seasoned researcher, you will find something of value in this book. I have literally worn the cover off of my second edition copy. The third edition is even better than the first or second. It is on my reference shelf, within easy reach, and I recommend it to my students in classes in research methods. I cannot recommend it too highly.

Useful for All Types of Research
By Bethany McKinney Fox
This book is a great handbook for people working to analyze the research they have compiled or for people preparing to do a report from a compilation of data. It helps with every step along the way. It gives 9 basic methods of research, so there is a good chance that your needs will be met. This book outlines how to go about starting, collecting your data/research, and how to compile it into a report. It is extremely helpful and its information is easily accessible for those without any formal training in research and evaluation. The only problem with this book is in its very nature. As a handbook, it covers only the bare bones of research and evaluation--and in the preface the authors suggest that you supplement your reading of this book with "standard texts or qualified consultants" in this area.

Classic research book
By Peggy Lumpkin
This book was recommended by a professor in my PhD program. She'd used it while getting her PhD. When she passed it around the class, we noticed her copy was obviously well used. This edition is only 234 pages, but it has a wide variety of definitions and examples of statistical and research methods. It would be perfect for a quick review for an exam or if someone has not taken statistics or research methods course in years.

Revit Commercial Design
By Herbert Coffer
Commercial Design Using Autodesk Revit Architecture 2011 is an updated version of the 2010 book. It is an excellent tutorial on producing a finished commercial building using Autodesk Revit Architecture. This book and its counterpart, Residential Design Using Autodesk Revit Architecture 2011, are a must for any beginner to intermediate user of Revit Architecture. The Judge's House: Inspector Maigret, Book 22, by Georges Simenon

Exiled from Paris, Maigret discovers some disturbing secrets in a sleepy coastal town in this new translation.

A short, sprightly man appeared in the doorway, looked left and right, and went back into the passage. A moment later, the improbable happened. The little man reappeared, bent over, clinging to a long mass that he now started dragging through the mud. It must have been heavy. After four metres, he stopped to catch his breath. The front door of the house had been left open. The sea was still 20 or 30 metres away.

This novel has been published in a previous translation as Maigret in Exile.

Georges Simenon was born in Lige, Belgium, in 1903. Best known in Britain as the author of the Maigret books, his prolific output of over 400 novels and short stories have made him a household name in continental Europe. He died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he had lived for the latter part of his life.

A Maigret interrogation -- otherwise known as "The Singing Session"
By R. M. Peterson
Penguin UK is in the midst of issuing new translations of all seventy-five of Georges Simenon's Maigret novels, one per month. THE JUDGE'S HOUSE was originally published in 1942; in its earlier English translation it was titled "Maigret in Exile". Reading it was sufficiently entertaining and sufficiently literary that I probably will indulge myself with a few others from the new Penguin series.

Detective Chief Inspector Jules Maigret has been exiled from the Police Judiciaire in Paris for unexplained reasons. He now toils in Luon, in the Vende. A curious old woman visits him to report that for two days there has been a body on the floor of an upstairs room of a judge's house in L'Aiguillon, a small village on the coast. Maigret accompanies the woman to L'Aiguillon and arrives in time to find the judge, in the middle of the night, dragging a corpse wrapped in a couple of sacks towards the ocean. The judge turns out to be very polite and extraordinarily unflappable, offering Maigret armagnac while he calmly explains matters in his library in front of a crackling blaze in the fireplace. That's the beginning to a rather peculiar tale of not one but two murders; a pair of headstrong young men who make their livings in the mussel fields; two mentally unbalanced, nymphomaniac women, mother and daughter; and a remote coastal community. It culminates with an unorthodox and riveting interrogation by Maigret.

Decades ago I read a fair amount of "detective fiction", but for some time now the genre hasn't held much interest for me. About a year ago I read my first Maigret novel by Simenon; it was engaging enough that I tried THE JUDGE'S HOUSE and, as mentioned, I suspect I will return for more. What's different about Simenon and Maigret? I don't yet have a satisfactory answer. Part of it surely has to do with the straightforward character of Maigret, who is stolid and rather ordinary, without the machismo of most leading men of the genre. Another part of the attraction has to do with the way Simenon tells his stories, with an accelerated pace but little of the tough, cynical prose of American noir fiction.

I do know that I have good company in admiring Simenon. The first page of this volume contains eleven blurbs from literary types -- among them William Faulkner ("I love reading Simenon. He makes me think of Chekhov."); Andr Gide ("The greatest of all, the most genuine novelist we have had in literature."); and Anita Brookner ("The mysteries of the human personality are revealed in all their disconcerting complexity."). In addition, I remember from a biography of T.S. Eliot that he too was an avid reader of Simenon.

* * * * *

I don't know whether the initial fault was Simenon's or the translator's (Howard Curtis), but there are two inconsistencies that Penguin should not have allowed to go into print. On the very same page (page 6), the old woman who sets the tale in motion tells Maigret that (a) she has a house in L'Aiguillon "near the harbour", and (b) that "the village of L'Aiguillon is quite far from the harbour". She also tells him that "only about twenty" people live in L'Aiguillon, but as the novel proceeds it is clear that at least ten times that number must live there, as there are two hotels, twenty or thirty working mussel boats, and dozens of schoolchildren.

You would not want this nosy pair for neighbors!
By Patto
Old Didine and her retired husband spend hours spying on their neighbor the judge. Finally it pays off! They spot a dead man on the floor of the judge's house. Didine rushes off to fetch Inspector Maigret.

Maigret has been exiled to this dull coastal town full of mussel farmers due to some unnamed infraction. He's dying of boredom, and a murder case comes as a veritable gift from heaven. Maigret hastens to Didine's house, and sure enough, next door the judge is dragging a man's body down to the water...

There are many delicious moments in this little novel: Maigret's guilty enjoyment of the judge's cozy sitting room and fine brandy, although the judge may be a murderer; old Didine's spiteful spouting of scandal about her neighbor; Maigret's loathing of his vulgar assistant who stinks of brilliantine...

A high point of the plot is Maigret's interrogation of two young mussel farmers. No one knows where he's going with his questions. One minute he's kind and sympathetic, the next minute he's putting on a fit of fury while angrily guzzling wine. This is the bear-like Maigret at his trickiest and most unpredictable.

I love Simenon's style, his ability to convey atmosphere in a few terse sentences, his internal dialog that breaks off so suggestively. The Judge's House (first published in 1942) is a little gem, rich in quirky characters and subtle humor.

another great Simenon mystery
By Miss Ivonne
An observant old lady alerts Detective Chief Inspector Maigret to some strange goings-on at her neighbor’s house in the 1942 novel The Judge’s House (also published as Maigret in Exile). And what Didine Hulot has seen at Judge Forlacroix’s house in L’Aiguillion is a dead body. She ensures that Maigret is on the scene when the retired judge tries to dispose of the corpse. And that’s just the beginning of this suspenseful novel, full of twists and turns. One of the best of Georges Simenon’s wonderful novels. And if you get to listen to the book narrated by Gareth Armstrong, so much the better.

Just Right
By M. Bateman
It starts off a little slow but ends very strong.

The last two chapters were very entertaining and instructive.

There are not very many variations (I'm not a big John Nunn fan) which I liked, as it keeps you focused
on the topic.

The material was not too basic or too advanced.

For the most part, complete games were presented.

It is the first Beim book I've read, and would now like to read his other books.

The Kindle edition has at least 3 errors in it that shouldn't be there.
1. Topalov - Kramnik Linares 1998 had the wrong diagram position - it used the last example diagram instead.
2. Kramnik - Nunn Germany 1994 Black's 20th move should be c6 not e6.
3. Smyslov - Tal Bled 1959 - There should be a pawn on h2.

So the proofreader(s) or the software used to convert from book to kindle only gets 2-3 stars.

It took me 20.5 hrs to finish the book.

Nice book
By Ricardo Drummond
But with a bit more diagrams would be even better. For beginners, following mid-size variations is not that easy. And revision in some games is needed

The Universe of Music, by Marina Korsakova-Kreyn

This is the story of music in visual metaphor. What makes music the "language of emotions," and why do we react to music at all? The author, a professional pianist and scholar in music cognition, compares our perception of music with orientation in 3-D space. The key metaphor is an image of a melodic object shaped by a tonal force field. Here, melodic elements are compared directly to geometric proportions, and some identified as artistic "universals." At the core of the aesthetic experience in music ultimately lies the mystery of non-linguistic human communication - its ability to generate emotions and even thought. This places the art of music at the center of contemporary discussion on the theory of mind.

About the Author
Marina Korsakova-Kreyn, a professional pianist and scholar in music cognition, was trained as a classical pianist in Russia. Upon graduation from Nizhny Novgorod Conservatory she worked there as a staff pianist. Following her interest in philosophy, Marina took two years in physics and mathematics at Nizhny Novgorod University and eventually became a student in cognition and neuroscience at The University of Texas at Dallas. Music was always at the center of her studies. As a passionate music educator, Marina designed and presented lecture-performances on Time-Space of Music at art and architecture schools in the US, Canada, and Russia. These lectures became the foundation for her research in quasi-spatial properties of music that predicted modality transcendence in melodic perception. This prediction has recently received the supporting evidence from two imaging studies conducted at McGill University. Her PhD dissertation is an original study in navigation in tonal space. In this study Marina proposes a new model of emotional processing in music. The Universe of Music is her first book.

An Enlightening Quick-Read
By Christa Vassillire
The Universe of Music is a comprehensive overview of the visual mechanisms the brain uses to make sense out of and create music. Korsakov-Kreyn takes the concept of time-space and applies it to music: she illuminates the direct relationship between certain proportional laws of architecture and the proportional laws of the Pythagorean intervals of tones in music, and how these tonal proportions are arranged in time to create a sense of meaning and therefore experienced emotion within all of us. She also gives a historical account of Western music, elucidating the theoretical differences between each musical era from the time of Gregorian chants to post-Second Viennese School. No previous knowledge of these terms or knowledge of music theory is required however - a "Useful Terms" section is provided as a reference. She incorporates into her essay numerous scientific studies examining music from this spatial perspective along with other relevant topics in music cognition. All studies and related readings are catalogued, allowing for further exploration by the reader. Physicists will enjoy the String Theory references, linguists will be enlightened upon reading about the relationship between language and music, and cognitive psychologists and neuroscientists will see the mind from a new perspective.
