The new economy's "no collar movement," in which companies embraced openness, cooperation and self-management among employees, captured the interest of Ross, director of New York University's American studies program. Fed up with reports of increasingly dehumanized workplaces in the wake of Jack Welch-style takeovers and downsizing, he investigated whether the new economy's trend to honor and utilize, rather than suppress, employees' human qualities had the potential to transfer to other industries. Studying two Manhattan-based new media companies, Ross found a refreshing excitement among workers at Razorfish, a design shop-cum-media consulting firm, and 360hiphop.com, a multi-ethnic media site. As Ross conducted in-depth interviews and closely observed operations at these companies, he discovered the young enthusiasts loved their work so much they found themselves working 70-hour workweeks and had almost no outside lives. Ross was also around to witness the wreckage caused when the Internet bubble burst and the companies had to switch their emphasis from the artisan/worker ideal to one focusing on the bottom line (with newly arriving hordes of MBAs calling the shots). The neo-sweatshop conditions may have been justified as being freely chosen before the bubble burst, but Ross's insights into the upheavals and heartbreak that followed the inevitable layoffs have much to say about the real-world limits to building more humane workplaces today. His chilling assessment of the price new economy workers paid for na‹ve faith in their bosses' promises can also be viewed more broadly as a direct message to all citizens of Free Agent Nation.

Did the reader from Los Angeles read the book?

It doesn't appear that the reader from Los Angeles read this particular book; it seems he/she simply took this space as an opportunity to rant about Andrew Ross and other vaguely related issues. Ross's book is a nuanced look at the peculiar culture of the new media workplace, just as the golden years began to fade. Considering that Ross was not actually an employee of Razorfish, the main company in his case study, his perspective is surprisingly sensitive. After spending the dot-com golden years in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, I was prepared to scoff at an outsider's interpretation of what the new media workplace was like, and how it felt to be an employee of that workplace. I was further prepared to roll my eyes at his choice of exploring New York's new media world rather than making the trip to the heart of it all, the San Francisco Bay Area. But in the end I was impressed: he explains his reasons for choosing New York, and they make sense. And he hits the nail on the head in terms of what was most odd and most interesting--as well as most consequential--about the feel-good, creative, ambitious new media work environment. The book grows significantly more "readable" after the first few chapters give way to more anecdotal scene-setting and conversations with Razorfish employees.

a band collar?

An entertaining and informative read about a time that will be remembered right along side tulip mania. No Collar differs from many business books because it gives valuable insights through the use of the powerful medium of story telling. The writer spent a good deal of time inside the company he focuses on and gives a compelling first hand account.
The lessons and ideas to be learned from this book are not spelled out like in many management books. The reader must read between the lines and come to his/her own conclusions.
One essential lesson to be learned from this account of a company during the inernet explosion and subsequent implosion is the necessity of corporate values and a vision.(built to last) While there is nothing wrong with striving to construct a workplace utopia, clear goals and direction are essential for any company. These ideas are not mutually exclusive from optimum working conditions and do not have to come at the expense of creativity.

More Than Insightful

Ross is always worth reading, and this book might just be his best so far. If it's not, it's certainly the best hands-on analysis of what the New Economy was like for the grunts in the office, and for those us who do knowledge work. No one else took the time he did (over a year) to go inside companies and talk to employees on the daily grind, week in week out. I'm mostly convinced by his conclusions about the perils of the humane workplace, though there's lot more to this book than that. The best thing is that he puts it all in the larger context of historical patterns of work in corporate America. No one, that I know of, has done that. And it's a great read, too.

"I never considered myself to be a musician when I was growing up. In fact, I was thoroughly convinced I did not have what it takes to be able to play music.

I took cello lessons and failed miserable. I took piano lessons without making much progress. I sort of learned to play the recorder in school, if you can call playing hot cross buns playing.

What I’m getting at is that I was a terrible musician. I couldn’t sing, I couldn’t keep time, I couldn’t play an instrument, the list of things I couldn’t do with respect to music is long.

I found this particularly frustrating because my father is an absolutely fantastic professional saxophone player. I figured somewhere in me there had to be an inherent talent for music.

I was very wrong.

What I realized as I grew older was that my father didn’t have an inherent musical talent either. What he did have was an unstoppable drive to succeed.

It took me a few years to get over my false idea that I could never be a good musician.

A few years earlier my father had bought me a guitar as a Christmas present. It was sitting in a dusty case in my room, neglected.

I had recently met a man named Jacob, another amazing musician. Jacob’s talent was with string instruments, particularly the bass. I asked his advice about what I should learn first.

He told me to learn music theory, so I went online and began to read. I read a lot and started to teach myself scales. I was still really terrible at the guitar, but I kept at it, and slowly I improved.

I stress the word slowly.

A couple weeks into this process I asked Jacob to teach me guitar, and he said he would. I quickly found out that Jacob–despite being a wonderful player–is a horrible teacher.

Jacob cannot think like a beginner, he cannot break down the knowledge and present it in bite sized pieces that are easy to swallow and digest.

I wrote this book with that in mind.

During the process of teaching myself the guitar, I learned a lot about how to teach guitar. I applied what I learned to write my best-selling guitar series: Scott's Simple Guitar Lessons.

I’m still learning today. Music is extremely complicated and eclectic. I know for a fact that I will never master music, but that was never my goal.

My goal was to be able to play with other people and enjoy doing it.

I've achieved that goal, and it was worth the work.

Now I want to help you achieve your musical goals, no matter what they are.

I want to use what I learned the slow, hard way to make your learning process fast and easy.

Chords Made Simple gets straight to the point

I have a reasonable grasp of chords: this simple book put what I already knew into a context. Simple, but straight to the point. I now understand much more about chords that I did beforehand. It has, tantalisingly, pushed the door open a little. I particularly liked the section on voicing.

Americans were fighting and dying in a tragic no-win War in Vietnam. Yet, a Georgia newspaper headline revealed this shocker: "RED CHINESE SOLDIERS TO TRAIN AT FORT BENNING." Yes, Americans were ordered to train the soldiers of a deadly Communist adversary they were already facing in battle during the Vietnam War! Who could possibly have approved such leftist lunacy? A nameless and faceless Defense Department spokesman offered a ludicrous rationalization for training soldiers from Communist Occupied China. He said: "The United States Government now regards China as a 'friendly, non-allied' country. “This policy is based upon the assessment that a modernizing, more secure China -- which shares with the United States a common threat [the Soviet Union] -- can be an increasing force for peace and stability in East Asia [As China has been in Cambodia, Vietnam, Tibet, Korea, etc.?]." Strangely enough, the Department of Defense still secretly listed Communist Occupied China as "hostile to the United States". This was the same lame excuse used years ago by leftists regarding Communist Occupied Russia. Americans were then told the snarling Russian Bear must be aided and appeased to make it "feel more secure." The Soviets had to be fed and armed because "a common threat" was shared. At that time the "common threat" was supposedly Communist Occupied China. Suffice to say, Communist Occupied Russia saw fit in 1985 to sign a very friendly $14 billion trade agreement with America's new found Red Chinese "ally". Marine Lieutenant Robert G. LoPresti had to use worn-out equipment in a field hospital near Pleiku. Spare parts weren't available for the generators at the field hospitals. Nor was the proper medical equipment! Wounded marines died unnecessarily as a result. Upon returning to the United States, LoPresti found the Communists were being supplied massive quantities of the same spare parts and equipment needed in Vietnam by American forces! He revealed in January of 1969: "The same machinery I couldn't get, the same equipment that would have saved the lives of those marines was declared 'non-strategic' and shipped to the very countries that supplied the rifles and bullets that are killing our men! “I remember visiting the Sixty -Seventh Evacuation Hospital in Qui Nhon. “Walking through the intensive-care ward, I saw dozens of soldiers who had been maimed and mutilated. “They had lost arms or legs, they were covered with plastic and swathed in bandages stained deep red by their own blood. “Most were in agonizing pain or under heavy sedation. “I knew that many would not live and others would be crippled and disfigured for life. “Seeing this bitter fruit of our government's madness, I wondered how our politicians would try to explain to these men about sending 'non-strategic' items to an enemy that has pledged to destroy us." The "politicians" never bothered! Nor did any of them intend to! A new era in treason was begun within weeks after Senator Barry Goldwater lost his Presidential bid in 1964. The radicalized Johnson Administration officially sanctioned a traitorous trip to wheel and deal for expanded business behind the Iron Curtain. The Honorable Ezra Taft Benson correctly charged in 1968: "In the waiting rooms of the Kremlin, American businessmen dream of personal gains and profits while thousands of American boys in Vietnam are slain by Communist bullets made in the USSR." Yes, while the war in Vietnam raged the United States merrily aided, fed, traded with, loaned money to and armed America's avowed Communist enemies throughout the world.

Robert W. Pelton has been writing for more than 45 years on political and historical subjects. He has published more than 100 books including the sensational Unwanted Dead or Alive – The Greatest Act of Treason in Our History Mr. Pelton proudly claims a heritage going all the way back to well before the War for American Independence. One of his ancestors, John Rogers, came to America on the Mayflower and was one of 41 signers of the Mayflower Compact. Another, John Smith was one of the founders of Jamestown. Peleg Pelton served as the fifer in the Continental Army at age 17 during the Battle of Saratoga (1777) and again in Yorktown (1781). Captain Peter Hager was Commander of the Old Stone Fort in Schoharie, New York, in 1780. Mr. Pelton is a member of Sons of the Revolution (SOR), and Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).

About the Author

Kimberly A. Miller-Spillman, PhD, is Director of Graduate Studies and Associate Professor in the Merchandising, Apparel, and Textiles Department of the University of Kentucky. She is a member of American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS), International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) and Costume Society of America (CSA) and chaired the symposium committee for CSA Southeastern Region at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill in 2011. She has been involved with the Ghana Study Abroad program at UK since 2010.

Andrew Reilly, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Apparel Product Design and Merchandising at University of Hawai`i, Manoa where he teaches courses on merchandising and social-psychological aspects of fashion and dress. He is principal editor of Critical Studies in Men's Fashion, and a member of the editorial board of Fashion and Popular Culture. He is also co-editor of The Men's Fashion Reader (Fairchild, 2008). He is a member of the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA).

Patricia Hunt-Hurst, PhD, is an Associate Professor and head of the Textiles, Merchandising, and Interiors Department at The University of Georgia. She teaches courses on the history of fashion and dress, fashion and the movies, and fundamentals of fashion. She had been involved with the Interdisciplinary Ghana Study Abroad program at UGA since 2001. Hunt-Hurst is a member of the Costume Society of America (CSA) and the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA).

Very good purchase! Excellent book...!

I bought this book for one of my college courses. So far is really good; very informative and up to date. It is easy to read and it goes to the point. I really like the fact that includes so many cases at the end of each chapter which makes the reading more enjoyable. I'm giving 4 starts instead of 5 because the images are in black and white. I expected full color images since I paid $80.00 for it and because it is a book about dress.

Good Book but old

This book is well written and interesting, but very out dated. It explains the meaning and feelings behind why and what people buy, very important for any designer.

Terrible Binding

Currently at this moment I'm working on getting a refund on this book. The binding of this book is terrible and could cost you the full price of the book. Luckily since Amazon's customer service can help remedy the problem since renters can inform Amazon about problems.

But if you plan on buying the book don't expect it to last more than a week even if it's brand new. At college literally (and I mean actually literally no exaggeration) every student in my fashion class who had the book was falling apart by the second week of class, even the teacher's copy was falling apart.

The material with in the book is good stuff and can be an interesting read in of itself and the shipping was fast but the book itself tears apart so easily that you will be absolutely baffled. I'm not sure if you can get a digital copy of the book but if you getting a physical copy expect it to fall apart or be prepared to return it very soon. If you are getting this book for reading pleasure I highly recommend that you find another book on a related topic and avoid the hassle of it's terrible binding.

I'm not sure if there is a digital version of this book but if you can get it go for it because digital copies don't have binding problems.
