Why do we think of clusters of films as 'national cinema'? Why has the relationship between the nation and film become so widely and uncritically accepted? "Theorising National Cinema" is a major contribution to work on national cinema, by many of the leading scholars in the field. It addresses the knotty and complex relationship between cinema and national identity, showing that the nationality of a cinema production company, and the films that its made, have not always been seen as pertinent. The volume begins by reviewing and rethinking the concept of national cinema in an age of globalisation, and it goes on to chart the parallel developments of national film industries and the idea of a nation state in countries as diverse as Japan, South Korea, Russia, France and Italy. The issues of a 'national cinema' for nation states of contested status, with disputed borders or displaced peoples, is discussed in relation to film-making in Taiwan, Ireland and Palestine. The contributors also consider the future of national cinema in an age of trans-national cultural flows, exploring issues of national identity and cinema in Latin America, Asia, the Middle-East, India, Africa and Europe. "Theorising National Cinema" also includes a valuable bibliography of works on national cinema.

An excellent introduction to Strategic Management

This is one of my favourite strategy texts. At first, I found this book fairly heavy reading. However, once I got deeper into the subject, I found it very useful (especially when I was studying for an MBA). I believe that the text provides the reader with a good grounding on strategic principles on which to build more specialist knowledge of the subject.
The text covers all the key steps of strategy development including analysis, selection and implementation. For each step, Johnson and Scholes also provides a number of techniques (including, PEST analysis, Porter's Diamond, Porter's Five Forces, Value Chain analysis, SWOT, Cultural Web, etc).

Best study book in Strategy currently available

When being midway in my MBA Strategy course, I bought this book. I've never regretted it, and it continues to be one of my favorites. In fact, I have many times wished I had it as my study litterature, as the authors manage to get thru a number of subjects in sufficient detail to make it understandable. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject. If you're not interested in Strategy, skip this book, as they are very concentrated on making you understand and learn what they are discussing. In short, I won't trade this book for anything, it saved my hide a number of times during study and I keep getting back to it to refresh my memory or understand some finer points.

The textbook is excellent and insightful. As someone coming to the subject of Strategy for the first time - this book is easy to read, using simple terms and interesting material, with lots of good, clear, up to date examples - I have been completely enthused by it! I have really enjoyed reading this book and found it very useful.

However - the quality of the actual book received was disappointing. Some of the pages are printed skew, some of the extreme edges have even been cut off - so that some page numbers are missing or cut in half. And the quality of the print on glossy paper is not good - if you make pencil notes as I sometimes do, and then need to erase it/change it - the eraser takes the print clean off the page with the pencil scribblings. Whilst none of these things are completely insurmountable, it does irritate me - someone who is fanatical about maintaining the pristine nature of a new book. We pay a lot of money for these textbooks, we (I) intend to use them for reference for many years to come, but one wonders how well this book will in fact stand the reglar use?!
Also, the publisher has used a glossy paper type which is very awkward to read at night when your eyes are tired - my desk lamp (low energy tube) creates a shine on the page that results in some interesting juggling of the book to avoid! Whilst this makes the book look "nice" I would suggest that subsequent printings use a different paper.
