Lower your taxes

This is a good book. The only difference between this one and previous editions is a small amount of information which directly applies to the current year the book is targeted toward. All the examples are the same as previous editions. One edition seems to have essentially the same info as another.

About the Author
Nathaniel is a pen name of Wojciech Usarzewicz, who is a Reiki Master Teacher and an experienced (despite his young age) spiritual practitioner born and living in Poland, Europe. When people ask him about his pen name, he says "Nathan" is a way easier to pronounce than his real name; thus he publishes his books under "Nathaniel" name. He's an author of numerous books on spiritual subjects: psychic development, Norse runes, New Age, clairvoyance and Reiki. He's not afraid of controversial subjects, because he believes in old latin proverb, "Homo sum...". He lives in Poland, where he teaches Reiki, as well as he practices other spiritual arts. On the path of his own spiritual growth, he had the opportunity to learn from Buddhist and Taoist masters, witches, shamans and many Reiki masters.

Basic but well arranged!!!!!!!
By JL
The reader must recognize that to put together "a complete guide to common elements of all magical systems" is a huge task. The first problem with this task to the author is to identify what is "common" and how to explain it. Nonetheless, I am giving four stars to this book because it includes very good and basic information. The explanation is clear and well arranged. The author is a Reiki practitioner so it is interesting some of his observations since this Reiki perspective.

On the other side, there are some comments I would like to make:

(1) The author is mentioning on page 22 that using Tarot cards isn't safe and connected to lower energies and entities. "Tarot cards are very difficult and dangerous tools..." but some Occult Orders like "The Builders of the Adytum (BOTA)", and "The Fraternity of the Hidden Light (FLO)" have extensive instructions on the Tarot in some of their courses and neither of those fraternities advise of any risk of being Tarot attached to lower entities or being a dangerous tool. It is true that these Tarot courses are designed to produce subconscious reactions automatically and to evoke specific emotional, intellectual and mystical states of awareness from the inner consciousness. Probably, the author is referring his comments to use the Tarot as a mantic tool. Anyway, these two Occult Fraternities do not mention any caution or simile with the author comments. It would be a good idea, the author can deep on this topic in a future revision of the book.

(2) On page 24, the author is saying "While many schools of magical or spiritual thought teach many additional techniques of focus (meditation, prayer), these are merely tools that help you clear your mind of unwanted thoughts, and focus yourself upon your goal." I don't agree with the author about what is mentioned regarding prayer. I don't think that any real practitioner of the Christian religion, and other main world religions would agree with this statement. A contradiction of this author's statement involving prayer is his description or explanation of prayer on page 234. It is not common to include or talk about prayer in a magick book because prayer is more related to religion.

(3) On page 164, the author is saying "The shape, color or size of the candle doesn't matter in general - but specific magical traditions may require special candles for specific rituals". We can see the personal opinion of the author regarding this matter but at the same time there are extensive bibliographies in which we can find the importance mainly of color of candles for special purposes.

(4) On page 229 and 230, the author is explaining the usage of the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram, a ritual from de Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The author gives "A word of warning - the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Earth Pentagram will block you for all kinds of energies for about 48 hours, whether positive or negative". I think this information is not complete and accurate. This is a basic Golden Dawn Ritual that uses the figure of the pentagram to cleanse the temple or ritual space of unwanted energies but not to block for all kind of energies for about 48 hours, whether positive or negative. A proof of this statement is that there are extensive bibliography related to the Golden Dawn in which it is explained the two forms of this ritual, The Lesser Invoking Ritual of the Pentagram (LIRP) and The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP). The first one is designed to call spiritual forces into the temple space, and the second one to get rid of unwanted spiritual energies. The Golden Dawn manuscripts advocated performing the invoking form of this ritual in the morning and the banish form at night. Also, there are personages that belong to the Golden Dawn, as Israel Regardie, who recommends to use the LBRP for few months, constantly, to have a good and palpable result. If the LBRP blocks you for all kinds of energies for about 48 hours, whether positive or negative, as the author is saying, the common recommendation to use it constantly for several months would be a contradiction because the user would completely be blocked for those months, and these rituals (LIRP &LBRP) are commonly used as a preamble for more elaborated rituals.

As a final comment, I recognized that it is very hard to put together a guide to common elements of all magical systems, and the author put together good information, which even though we can call it "basic or elemental", it was very well arranged. I recommend the book.

Spirituality, Magic and Protection Techniques ...
By Regina Chouza
Wow - really comprehensive! I have no experience with magic, though I am a healer. I read this out of curiosity more than anything else. The book covers a lot of information that we need if we are going to open up to intuition, healing, energy work and of course, magic.

Nathan starts by warning the "curious adventurer" to stay away from the supernatural. His approach reminds me of the way I was taught to swim in the Pacific Ocean: you can enjoy riding the waves but its important to respect the ocean's immense power. Otherwise we are just as likely to be whipped by the currents and sent out to sea ...

I think the author didn't take these precautions when he started, and this book is his way of helping others avoid the same mistakes. It covers all of the basics: amulets, karma, law of attraction, altars, cleaaring spaces, healing, angels, guides and other helpers, as well as what you might call Defense AGainst the Dark Arts. ( I kept thinking Hogwarts and Snape when I read it). Its also very blunt and direct - the author pulls no punches. The language and examples used can be surprising and a bit shocking at times, especially coming from a more reserved and PC culture. One word of caution: Read the Book of Spirits in the daylight because it did have me jumping whenever the floor boards creaked lol.

Highly recommended!
By Marc
Before reading this book, I didn't really know how often we encounter magick everyday. In fact, 'The Essentials of Magick' might be a bit scary sometimes, but it's all for your own good.

So, what do we have here? Nathaniel covers all the essentials, starting with theory - what is magick, how different worlds interact and so on. There are also more practical information about spirits, magick tools and magical attacks.

If you want to deal with magick in any form, it is highly recommended to read this book. Nathaniel writes about complex things in a very understandable way, but what is even more important - he clearly describes all the dangers of practicing magick. This might be scary for some readers, but it's very important to know. After all, you don't want any nasty spirit feeding on you, do you?

Once again, I highly recommend 'The Essentials of Magick' (and all his other books, too).

A Good Novel about "Bad Faith" "The Fall" is a short ...
By Robert Boyle
A Good Novel about "Bad Faith"

"The Fall" is a short book, written simply in language a high school student can understand, but it is not an easy book to read. For one, the main character is an "unreliable narrator" -- one must look past his egregious self-deception and intellectual dishonesty to see what is really going on. For another, understanding this book requires some versing in Existentialism (whether you agree with existentialist philosophy is not the issue; knowing its issues is). It also helps to see "The Fall" as the third tale in Camus' triptych: "The Plague", "The Stranger" and "The Fall" (which is his last written work). These three books explore different aspects of existential being: man against nature, man against his fellow man, man against himself. (familiar to all beginning literature students, but here they are given a sophsiticated twist). One may disagree with my following analysis, but I think interested readers bold enough to tackle "The Fall" will find it useful.

EXISTENTIALISM: This 20th century philosophy is still very controversial, but it has value as it addresses as no other philosophy does the "problem" of human being, of trying to make sense of an absurd world. We are not (merely) mechanical animals subject to scientific causal processes -- we have free will; yet we are not pure free spirits, able to do as we please -- we are subject to the travails of nature and our fellow humans, and our own frailties and contradictions.

There are key relevant premises in existentialism (I cannot hope to give a full account of existentialism here and will not try). One is that people are conscious and aware, and have attitudes (not merely objective sense-knowledge) towards things. The world and ourselves and others have meaning for us, and this meaning is largely of our own making. How you see the world will depend on what you think of things and believe in, what values you have and what matters to you and what you desire (or eschew). A fundamentalist Christian Republican, a gay socialist and a Muslim Kenyan will see the world differently, and act according to their respective world views.

The key premise (see Sartre, various essays and especially "Being and Nothingness") is our ability to respond freely to the "facticities" (matters of fact) of the world. There is no presumption that God has a 'plan' -- He may have, but that does not change the fact that we are free to follow it or choose to thwart it. Science may be a deterministic process, but we are in a very real sense "causes", and, as causes, we are capable of effecting how things will turn out to be. We can cut down forests or fed the poor, or get drunk or run a marathon as we choose. External forces may intervene -- the home you built may be destroyed by a tornado . . . and life is certainly not fair. (See the Book of Job, in which Job has everything torn from him, but he remains "his own man".) This is the key point: we cannot fully determine what life will dish out to us ("Man plans, and God laughs"), but we can always choose what we will do in response. Understanding this is the key to existentialist ethics: we may do what we like, but we can never say "I had no choice", or, more famously, "I was only following orders". You always have a choice, and if you follow orders (from God or your church elder or terrorist cell leader) that is *your* choice. The mistake many people make is in thinking that there must always be a *good* choice (i.e., making the assumption that life IS fair -- which it is not, though we do have the option and power to act fairly). (NB: John F Kennedy once said that when he took office as president that he would always do 'the right thing' and avoid doing 'the wrong thing', only to find (as in the Cuban Missile Crisis") that, alas, the choice was usually between doing this wrong thing and that wrong thing!)

"Bad Faith" is a concept critical to Camus' works. It is Sartre's term for a person's denial of his or her own free choice. Given a choice between obeying the Nazis or being killed, embezzling or going broke, lying or getting fired, put up with being oppressed and rioting or terrorizing, etc., people love to say by way of justification: "I had no choice". This is bad faith. In existentialist morality you may do whatever you choose, at the cost of having to take moral responsibilty for your choice. Thus one can argue that President Truman (on behalf of the USA) made the right (or wrong) choice in bombing Hiroshima, but one cannot say that he "had no choice" -- the decison was his and America's (in voting for him), and any blame (and any future nuclear decisions) are his and ours as well.

"THE PLAGUE": Briefly, this is a story of how people in a town in 1950s Algeria faced the onset of bubonic plague. The town is suddenly hit by plague, put under government quarantine, and the townspeople, who can neither escape nor protect themselves, must ride out this terrifying event. One man (a French tourist) is separated from his wife; he never sees her again; he is tragically the very last victim of the plague before it subsides. The point of the story is that he, and others, given the fact that they had no choice about falling into this situation, all have and make choices as to how they will respond to this catastrophe. Some are in denial, living as if they are immune, or fated to die. Some pray, others live in profligate indulgence. The tourist chooses to spend his last days helping the narrator (the town physician) treat and care for plague victims. In his final days he leads an exemplary life (if one accepts the notion of charity as a life-principle), but that is not the point; he does not do so because he "has to" -- he simply does what he does (always hoping he will live through this to see his wife again), and that makes him what he is. There is no "reward", conversely no "you are a chump, or an unlucky dog" judgment either. He simply chose to do what he did, and that is how he lived and how he died. He did not complain that life was unfair (as much as it was); he acted as he wanted to do, doing what he could with what he had.

"THE STRANGER": This is for many people a far more problematic book. Many readers judge the tourist of "The Plague" as good, a hero, because his choice conforms to their *own* morality. We all tend to judge people as "things like us" (friends) or not (i.e., enemies). This makes sense if you feel that your morals are how we are all fated to live (the Nazis, and ISIS feel this way, as do many people of any major faith or politics); but per existentialism the individual person (or group) is not determined (morally or otherwise) to be what someone else expects them to be. *I* do not determine *your* being -- that would be bad faith -- I may educate or advise or coerce you, but your being is your responsibility. This moral freedom upsets some people; they want to be told what they "should" do, when no such orders are forthcoming. Sartre wryly notes: "we are *condemned* to be free".

In "The Stranger", Mersault is a man who kills another man in a moment of anger, is brought to trial, and the issue is not whether he is guilty of the murder (he is) or whether he is legally justified (he is not) but how he should *feel* about his impulsive and unjust act. The conventional view is that he should show remorse, and repent and ask forgiveness. He does not, even when doing so (which would be insincere) would impress the court and mitigate his sentence. In fact he does not know how he feels. He is not an openly emotionally expressive or introspective man. (At the start of the story he is at his mother's funeral: "Maman died today . . ." and does not cry at the funeral parlor -- this is taken as "evidence" that he is a moral reprobate: he does not act "as he should". Ultimately, he is found guilty of murder because he did not cry at his mother's funeral; we are all "supposed" to act in a certain way no matter what; Mersault will not play along and "fake" social sentiment, and society is repulsed by this flouting of social conventions.

It is hard to like Mersault, yet there is an underlying tone of horror about a society that will condemn a man to death for his absence of *feelings*. Mersault is an existentialist hero (albeit an odd one) for being true to his being. We may be tempted to fault him for this: why not just "pay the two dollars" (to quote a line from an old vaudeville sketch). It is normal, even proper to fake social proprieties; it is a form of social control and obedience. Yet in that era (the 1940-50s) people toed the line with the Nazis, or the Soviets or in America the McCarthyites or other "mob" mentalities for the sake of conformity and safety, at the cost of supporting abominal social immorality. (Sartre hated his fellow Frenchmen for letting the Nazis cart French Jews off to the death camps with not as much as a word of protest.) For all his quirks, Mersault is an exemplary existientialist. We may fault him for his act of murder, but it does not seem right to fault him for his sincerity and authenticity.

"THE FALL": The title refers to a suicide who falls off a bridge overpass (she drowns), but this is not her story. The story is about the sole witness to this event, a cocky, nasty, self-assured bossy aloof man lacking any of Mersault's better qualities. At first glance the reader of "The Fall" is likely to think that the main character, a lawyer named Clamence (aka "clemency" -- "mercy or charity"), is another moral "maverick" like Mersault, and that Camus will be churning out yet another "loner against the system" story, but this is not the case. We see something new here.

Unlike Mersault, Clamence is guilty of bad faith. The trick for the reader is to see how this is the case. Clamence is a thoroughly unreliable narrator. A successful Parisian defense lawyer, he hangs out alone at a bar in a seedy section of Amsterdam and spends his nights seducing people into thinking he is a Mersulat -- morally Above It All. In his monologue, he sneeringly derides all of the moral chumps who kowtow to the social norm, and we are lead (at first) to believe he is sincerely unaffected by social norms -- a true moral iconoclast. But as the story of his life unfolds, he inexorably drifts back to the night the girl jumped off the bridge, and the fact that he did not intercede to save her. In the end it is revealed that this ugly fact about himself torments him. He cannot admit this to himself, and thus cannot forgive or exonerate himself or atone for his act, or even accpet (as Mersault might have) the fact of his act; he is not so tough after all, and thoroughly a man of bad faith, so he suffers.

This simple story is rich in its unfolding. (Why if he is a successful lawyer, is he hanging out alone in this Algiers bar? As the Wikipedia article on this book (which I highly recommend although I do not agree with all of its conclusions) points out, the bar and surrounding town resembles a concentric circle of hell in Dante's "Inferno" -- in this circle Clamence does penence for his sins.) Unfolding and cracking the "unreliable narrator" puzzle is one of the joys of reading this book -- it takes work, yes, but it has its definite rewards.

The larger question this book addresses is this: people who learn about Existentialsm often are repelled by its apparant (but not actual) "amorality", and demand: if you may do as you choose, then where are the moral limits? Doesn't existentialism's laissez-faire moral code sanction the Nazis, or more recemntly Putin, or ISIS, and any wanton reprobate? The answer to the question (a perfectly legitimate one, and often not answered well by profesional existentialist philsophers) is NO, and here is why. The downside of freedom is that you must live (as an individual or as a group) with the consequences of your acts. You may do as you please, but you may not avoid responsibility for the results. Cumulatively, what you do becomes what you are. (As Kurt Vonnegut wrote in "Mother Night" (about an American who goes under "deep cover" in the Nazi regime, only to be tried afterwards by the Israelis for war atrocities) "be very careful what you pretend to be, for you may one day wake up to find out that this is what you really are".)

The reality is, says the existentialist, that we are able to do what we please, because we are human (to deny this is bad faith; we are not moral puppets). The catch is that we make ourselves what we are by what we choose to do (to deny this is also bad faith). When we accept "God's law", or human constitutions or cultural values, gang creeds or our own personal rules, or live as a complete iconoclast or wanton, we are fully responsibile for our acts. To our credit, or discredit, our acts make us what we are. Clamence may reject all social and moral standards, but he still suffers for his arrogance, for he has a conscience (existentialists acknowledge that some people don't, and that society must deal with this "facticity" as with all others) that does not let him sleep at night.

I highly recommend the reader of "The Fall' to briefly review any short encyclopedia of philosophy (such as the Stanford online E of Phil) article on existentilism, and then read "The Plague", and then "The Stranger", first. This will make "The Fall" far easier to grasp and appreciate.

As I said, it is not an easy book, but it is a great book, rich in its complexity and its theses about human nature. (NB: some people reject existentialism as immoral and even "un-Christian" (or un-Jewish, un-Muslim, un-Buddhist, etc.). In fact there is a branch of religious philosophy -- Christian existentialism (and there are Jewish and Muslim couterparts) -- that sees both free will and God's grace in the context of the exasperatingly unrestrained freedom we have to be what we are. The story of Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac, the Book of Job, the story of Jepthah (a tale of bad faith, found in Judges, as I recall), and other Biblical passages are deeply rooted in existentialist thought. Fundamentalist religion tends to sweep this problem under the rug with the dictum "it is all God's will, God's plan", ignoring the fact that the very texts they hold to be sacred raise the "existential problem" as a burden we humans must face (Muslims call it "jihad" (struggle); Jews acknowledge it in the story of Jacob wrestling with the angel (in his odd dream), and Christians have many examples of the "trials" of been a Christian. Philosopher Soren Kierkegard, a devout Lutheran wrote an entire book: "Fear and Trembling" on the dilemma raised yet not answered!) by the story of the Sacrifice of Abraham.)

Whatever your own world view, the Camus trilogy is thoughtful and provocative, and well worth the time to read.

I strongly recommend that you read this book!
By avataress
This book is truly great to me although I've said most of the books I've read are great because I saw almost every person I've ever known written about in this book! I've read this book several times and have given at least one copy away. The only other book to match it in describing almost every person I've ever known my whole life is Toni Morrison's book entitled, The Bluest Eye. I would strongly recommend that you read both these books regardless of what race or nationality you may be! They're for all time! Both by Nobel Prize Winners, too!

trip to self realization gone wrong.
By Wicho
Great essay on the vanity embedded at the core of the human and how even after a very thorough trip of self discovery a person can still manage to put himself before others as a means of self idealization.... I realized I am rotten, but having the realization makes me better than you who have not even realized it....

Why I Left Goldman Sachs: A Wall Street Story, by Greg Smith

On March 14, 2012, more than three million people read Greg Smith's bombshell Op-Ed in the New York Times titled "Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs." The column immediately went viral, became a worldwide trending topic on Twitter, and drew passionate responses from former Fed chairman Paul Volcker, legendary General Electric CEO Jack Welch, and New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg. Mostly, though, it hit a nerve among the general public who question the role of Wall Street in society -- and the callous "take-the-money-and-run" mentality that brought the world economy to its knees a few short years ago. Smith now picks up where his Op-Ed left off.

His story begins in the summer of 2000, when an idealistic 21-year-old arrives as an intern at Goldman Sachs and learns about the firm's Business Principle #1: Our clients' interests always come first. This remains Smith's mantra as he rises from intern to analyst to sales trader, with clients controlling assets of more than a trillion dollars.

From the shenanigans of his summer internship during the technology bubble to Las Vegas hot tubs and the excesses of the real estate boom; from the career lifeline he received from an NFL Hall of Famer during the bear market to the day Warren Buffett came to save Goldman Sachs from extinction-Smith will take the reader on his personal journey through the firm, and bring us inside the world's most powerful bank.

Smith describes in page-turning detail how the most storied investment bank on Wall Street went from taking iconic companies like Ford, Sears, and Microsoft public to becoming a "vampire squid" that referred to its clients as "muppets" and paid the government a record half-billion dollars to settle SEC charges. He shows the evolution of Wall Street into an industry riddled with conflicts of interest and a profit-at-all-costs mentality: a perfectly rigged game at the expense of the economy and the society at large.

After conversations with nine Goldman Sachs partners over a twelve-month period proved fruitless, Smith came to believe that the only way the system would ever change was for an insider to finally speak out publicly. He walked away from his career and took matters into his own hands. This is his story.

From Booklist
Goldman Sachs, the “Rolls Royce of investment banks,” has remained in business for more than 140 years, primarily due to a strict set of moral values that revolve around the principle that the “clients’ interests always come first.” These were the principles that were in place when Smith joined the firm as a junior analyst in the early 2000s. He describes entering an extremely competitive environment in which only the upper echelon of the best and the brightest survive, in which confidentiality, honesty, and integrity are fundamental to every business decision, and in which justice can be swift and brutal. A well-liked and promising study, Smith rose quickly through the ranks, witnessing firsthand the immediate effects of the tech bubble, the 9/11 attacks, and the housing meltdown. Through the turmoil, Goldman Sachs remained the one bellwether securities firm that could not be toppled, but inside the firm, the culture was changing. Rather than simply advising and trading for customers, Sachs began to resemble a hedge fund, doing proprietary trading and often taking positions opposite those they recommended to clients, a huge conflict of interest. Ultimately, the climate eroded so badly that only the largest commissions, known as “elephant trades,” became the driving force for everything the company aimed for, as clients’ interests fell completely by the wayside. This finally led to Smith’s famous March 14, 2012, op-ed for the New York Times, titled “Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs.” Despite Smith’s pointed criticism of Goldman Sachs, he is otherwise remarkably kind to the company. There is not much mud to sling, but what we find is a personal tale of one person caught up in a wave of greed, betrayal, and a complete disregard for the standards that had made Goldman Sachs the most trusted name on Wall Street. --David Siegfried

Review
A portrait, in Proustian detail, of a world and a mentality that is utterly alien, and should be infuriating, to most of us on Main Street.

-- Mark Gongloff, Huffington Post

A personal tale of one person caught up in a wave of greed, betrayal, and a complete disregard for the standards that had made Goldman Sachs the most trusted name on Wall Street.

-- David Siegfried, Booklist

[Greg Smith] did what we would all hope that our own banker would do: he spoke out publicly about something that was wrong.

-- Hamilton Nolan, Gawker

An insider's take on Goldman Sachs strikes a nerve....it provides a rare inside look into a career path to which many aspire: from nothing to Wall Street affluence. It will also be read because of its characterisation of Goldman's integrity. Where once it profited from helping clients prosper, the bank shifted, Mr Smith contends, into an entity that profited from clients.

-- The Economist

...Smith has written a field guide to the culture of Goldman Sachs and a fly-on-the-wall account of Wall Street on the skids.

--USA Today

The author's personal account of the many facets of daily life at Goldman Sachs gives his memoir the power of persuasion and conviction.

-- Kirkus

Excellent and 100% Accurate Portrayal of Wall Street Excess - Spot On!
By JK
Well written and completely accurate portrayal of the excesses and improprieties of Wall Street culture. I can say firsthand from my own experience on the Goldman trading floor, Greg Smith must have really held back in this book. There are so many more outrageous stories and examples that could have gone into this book. But nonetheless, I don't think the book was meant to be an SEC complaint with specific indictments but a mere snapshot outline of what is wrong with Wall Street today, and Goldman Sachs in particular. The book reads easy, does a great job explaining some of the trader terminology, and is really best suited for those with little to no exposure to Wall Street who are looking for a "no B.S." account of what is plaguing the institutions behind our global financial system.

A Good Read but I expected more focus on Bigger Issues
By epublisher
First, the book should have been titled "My career at Goldman Sachs before and after the financial crisis" since the author's reason for leaving the firm occupies only the last quarter of the book. Too much of the book is spent on personal anecdotes on individuals, client stories and parties. If the purpose was to open GS to outsiders who care about the personalities of VPs, MPs, Associates etc., then the book is highly informative. I had hoped that the book would also offer an insider's view of the big "financial crisis" issues: such as:

* Why was Goldman operated as a hedge fund with leverage levels that made it vulnerable to collapse?

* Why does the firm still have a net derivative exposure 7 times its risk-based capital, the highest among all federally chartered banks and seven times greater than Morgan Stanley?

* Why was it OK for the taxpayers to cover Goldman's counterparty risk with AIG derivatives?

* If Goldman and others are operating a rigged casino to fatten up partner and associate bonuses (total 2012 GS salary, bonus and perks spending was reported to be $13 billion, or about $400,000 per employee), then should the government ban proprietary trading?

* Have the hundreds of trillions of dollars in derivative products peddled by Goldman and others merely set the stage for a worldwide financial system meltdown when the Central Banks cannot stop future runs on the counterparties and banks?

These and other issues related to conflicts of interest, sleazy ethics and non-fiduciary conduct are of greater importance for reforming the financial services industry.

I give the author a great deal of credit for writing the book and op-ed piece since he is very cautious by nature and would even ask colleagues for advice on simple things, like whether to attend a colleague's bachelor party. He is also an honorable man who appears sincere but in many ways still sees Wall Street people as basically good but that they work within a corrupt system.

Another view of the conduct he reveals (e.g., giving self-serving recommendations, taking the "axe off" Goldman's balance sheet) is that GS staff are acting like con men. People who embezzle thousands of dollars get multi-year jail terms while Wall Street traders who intentionally fleece clients out of millions of dollars walk away rich after a few years of pirating.

I hope that this Mr. Smith can come to Washington and work for the structural reforms that are desperately needed. The author wrote many market profiles while working for the firm; perhaps, future books and articles can explore solutions for the problems that remain. Thanks for giving us a glimpse into the hidden world of Goldman Sachs.

The knowledge of good and evil
By A dad
The book almost could be titled, "Why I Left Government." It's about a career in big finance. After years working with elite financial professionals, Greg Smith's values came in conflict with the business. Customers and the public get disrespected because we're often gullible when it comes to financial instruments.

Goldman Sachs (GS) had a storied and honorable tradition. Things changed during Smith's 12-year tenure. GS's corporate culture now reflects the corruption and cynicism of our society, only on a scale defying imagination.

Be warned that the author, in my view, is not a natural storyteller. It's easier to stay with a story when the characters are brought to life. My review is based on the audible version which is unabridged and narrated by the author. I always appreciate it when the author is the narrator. Smith's personal style is that he doesn't speak with a lot of passion.

Smith started as a competitive academic high-performer when he was 21-years old in 2000. He describes the selection process as if coaching college students to make the cut with big-name firms. Candidates get subjected to extreme pressure and embarrassment. Smith later learned GS did this to assess candidates for integrity, as it's tempting to make stuff up under pressure in an effort to save face. Despite the state of the stock market at the time with the dot-com crash under way, those were idealistic and innocent times compared to now. In some respects, Smith's book is sincerely flattering to GS.

I feel that Smith's turning point came when his best friend Lex asked one simple question. Lex was concerned about Congress passing TARP and bailing out Goldman Sachs along with other elite firms. Lex asked, "What about the other people whose 401Ks are getting decimated. Where's their bailout?" This question planted the seed. Smith began to understand that big winnings at GS were due to its quasi-government status and not delivery of superior service to clients.

The former Goldman Sachs chief lobbyist, Mark Patterson had been brought in as chief of staff to Timothy Geithner at Treasury. GS's link to the welfare of its clients was gone. GS was in the DC power structure so realities on the ground had quietly shifted. Taxpayers made good dollar-for-dollar the enormous AIG bailout that went mainly to GS. The public would simply have to wait down the line for some kind of bailout, if it ever comes. And if it comes, John Q. Citizen might not immediately recognize it because trust was wiped out. That's what Smith seems to be trying to repair.

Smith's depiction of GS tracks with the Wall Street culture famously described in Liar's Poker, by Michael Lewis. Entry into the culture of Goldman was exactly like entry into Salomon Brothers per Lewis. Young candidates were treated almost as dismissively as military recruits in boot camp/basic training. You're ready to graduate from the training when you can verbally stand up to your tormentors without violating the culture rules. I was fascinated.

Smith's account lends support to some extent to Robert Kiyosaki's assertions that GS runs the government. Kiyosaki is author of Rich Dad Poor Dad. I got the impression that GS can get the rules changed in its favor. Clearly Smith's book gives GS partners something to worry about though. No client likes to be taken for a sucker. GS once had a stellar reputation, seems so long ago.

Review

"[Principles of Neurobiology] is distinct in its philosophy and authorship, which makes it valuable for teaching and a pleasure to read. Luo shares with us the belief that students should not be taught just facts and knowledge but also how knowledge is obtained and how principles are derived....In 13 chapters and 645 pages, he provides a masterpiece highlighting principles of how the nervous system transforms and governs our sensation, action, memory, and thought. Reading Principles of Neurobiology is like enjoying a beautiful piece of music....[Luo] has set an example of how an outstanding scientist cares about education and writes a textbook to inspire students to pursue discoveries. We hope that students will follow this pied piper, happily and fruitfully."

The newest and best introductory neuroscience text around today
By James Tepper
PRINCIPLES OF NEUROBIOLOGY is brand new neuroscience text book aimed at the upper division undergraduate neuroscience major or the first year neuroscience graduate student. It is exceptional in its organization that, as sole author Liqun Luo states in the preface, ",,, intentionally breaks from the traditional division of neuroscience into molecular, cellular, systems and developmental sections. Instead, most chapters integrate these approaches." It is wonderfully successful at this. In addition, the single author approach results in a uniform style and even depth of coverage. The 13 chapters are carefully organized and sequenced so that the book can be used, as written from beginning to end as a one or two semester course that covers a huge amount of material, from 19th century psychophysics to the newest state of the art in molecular neurobiology.

The figures are beautifully done and well-chosen. The experiments illustrated range from redrawings of classical experiments from the middle the 20 century to state-of-the-art neuronal molecular and cell biology and optogenetics. The visual system is especially well done, but so are the sections on the other senses and motor systems. Regulatory systems are covered, including sexual behavior. Learning and memory and development and evolution of the mammalian central nervous system are here, as well as a chapter on neuropsychiatry disorders. The text closes with a welcome and badly needed chapter on techniques, something that is overlooked in most of the other general neuroscience texts that I have read.

This text covers general introductory neuroscience from A-Z. I should note that by "neuroscience", I mean principally the structure and function of mammalian neurons and the central nervous system. While there are behavioral experiments described throughout the text, this is definitely a neurobiology-based approach to neuroscience as the title suggests. It does not venture into cognitive neuroscience, something that is better left to a more specialized text. There is also relatively little pharmacology or neurochemistry per se.

PRINCIPLES OF NEUROBIOLOGY is, in my opinion, the best single textbook for teaching a comprehensive survey of modern neuroscience. The author is to be congratulated on this fine effort. We will be adopting this book next fall for our first year graduate course, "Foundations of Neuroscience".

Highly recommended.

In loose-leaf version, holes impinge on text
By harlingford
I have not yet started reading the book...but I was disappointed that in the loose-leaf version, there are holes punched that impinge on the text by about 1 mm. If they had just off-set the holes a little it would have been perfect.
In most pages I've looked at, it is easy to guess at the word or letters the holes eliminated, but it is irritating.

one could not ask for a better introduction to the field

Most informative, superb organisation and extrem clarity. With neurobiology becoming the biomedical science of the 21th century, one could not ask for a better introduction to the field.

Following My Thumb, by Gabriel Morris

Following My Thumb follows the wandering, rambling, bumbling travels of Gabriel Morris from 1990-2000. In the summer of 1990, at the age of 18, he sets off to Europe with his over-sized backpack, thumb guiding the way. He hitchhikes the entire length of Great Britain, sleeps in barns, on bridges and beaches and under benches, explores the Greek Isles, sneaks into a Parisian movie theater, spends a night at the center of the Place de la Concorde roundabout, and more. In Part 2 of the book, he spends the bulk of the mid-1990s as a wandering traveler back home in the United States, searching for something elusive: a place to call home, a community, love, adventure, meaning, purpose. He both finds and loses all to varying degrees as he attends tribal Rainbow Gatherings in the woods, falls in and out of love on the road, lives on farms and communes, and spends several months in an idyllic valley, far from civilization in the Hawaiian rainforest. The book culminates with his amazing and thought-provoking travels in the mystical land of India.

Be Warned! You WILL book a ticket after reading this book!
By Cynthia
Be warned that while reading "Following My Thumb" you will be tempted SEVERAL times to book a flight to any(or all!) destinations mentioned in Gabriel's book! Gabriel really makes his readers feel like they are on the wanderlust journey with him! While reading, I pictured myself in every scenario as if I was the one taking the journey. It felt real! The hilarious stories not only had me laughing out loud but up at the wee hours of the morning turning every page anxiously to find out what happens next! Grab a cup of tea, curl up and let Gabriel take you on an exciting journey as he paints his stories in a way that make you feel like you are listening to a good friend relive his adventures! If you have always yearned to travel outside the familiarity of your home or break free from 9-5 work days and finally book a vacation, you will need no further convincing after reading "Following My Thumb" I am on my way to Europe in 2 weeks and I can partially blame Gabriel for this :)

A good read
By Bonnie Neely
FOLLOWING MY THUMB BY GABRIEL MORRIS is an interesting book about amazing hitch-hiking journeys by the author, who spent about 10 years literally following his thumb. He traversed several continents this way with only a backpack and tent and his carefully selected shoes. He is obviously a minimalist who loves the out of doors and is fearless in nature and amongst strangers. His solitude and what he gains from this is touching. You will find this book both fun to read and will catch yourself saying, "I can't believe he did that!" His many experiences inspire his spiritual nature and help him gain much wisdom and insight into people and places. A good read!
