The best bible available today.

Dr. Morris has provided us with 50+ years of bible study in his notes, and does so by NEVER stating "I feel" or "in my opinion". He ALWAYS uses Scripture to verify Scripture. This is also the only Bible that has notes that stand on a 6-day, 24-hour creation period, AS GOD STATES, A N D is the ONLY bible where you will have notes that explain that Behemoth in Job 40 is indeed a dinosaur. Every other publisher gives in to the lie of Evolution and describes that as an elephant or hippo... please, with the "tail of a cedar"?
Dr. Morris is a very godly Christian man who has dedicated his life to the accuracy and perfectness of Scripture. The notes in the Defender's Bible will make ANYONE have a truer understanding with the difficult passages of Scripture, and even have their questions answered, such as "Where did Cain get his wife?" and "How do the Dinosaurs fit in with the Bible?", plus the truth about fossils, Carbon 14 dating, the Grand Canyon (result of the Flood), etc.
The Bible text is the best: the robust, accurate King James. There are 18 appendices that fill in scientific data as well. An ABSOLUTE must-have.

This is an excellent Study Bible! It has plenty of notes dealing with Creation as well as a wide variety of other important topics. It supports literal Biblical Creationism and follows a literal approach to all of the Bible!

Outstanding

This is the second best Bible I have ever read (the best is the New Defender's Study Bible). I've read three types of NIV's, the NASB, the Holman Christian Study Bible, the Net Bible and others cover to cover. This is the King James Version (KJV) with notes by Dr. Henry Morris. Dr. Morris is incredibly visionary and helpful about many things and is likely correct on most issues. This is a must read for any student of the Bible.

Great memory book for your child's keepsakes

This particular purchase was a gift for a friends son, but I still have my 12 year olds sons book from 4 years ago. It's full of stories to be completed by your child and so funny to look back on when they're older. The hardback is very durable, has held up through a crazy (now 12 years old, as the photo shows:) ) boys toting it around and a move. I'll be holding on to this forever.

I love how it's a diary, but not

If you have a kid between the ages of 7 and 12, who LOVES The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, you have to get this book! My 10yr old begged and pleaded, and begged more for this book. When it arrived, you would have thought I was the coolest and best mom ever!

I love how it's a diary, but not. The kids get to make their own dialogues with some helpers. Highly recommend this "Do-It-Yourself" book for all kids who love the series. I think my son was done in one weekend filling it out (in pencil).... a few weeks later, he went in and erased a few things, and re-wrote. This has given him the desire to write his own books. Love it!

This is such a great series for children. My niece was so happy to get them, she's 10 and she read all 10 in 5 days. She ate them up, any book that can make a kid who has video games and a computer on hand choose it instead is worthy of buying.

Makes Tokyo A Little Less Overwhelming

I used the DK Eyewitness Travel "Top 10 Tokyo" guide extensively on a trip to Japan last year. I appreciated its compact nature and distilling the overwhelming (but awesome) confusion of being a first time visitor to Tokyo into actionable bullet points. The included map is also handy, but I particularly appreciated the coverage of the Meiji Shrine and of the art and craft stores: when I travel abroad I want to see things and buy products that are unique to the destination and the coverage here helped greatly. Ginza in particular would have been much harder to negotiate had I not read "top 10 Tokyo" first.

The DK "Top 10" books are revised frequently, so make sure you're buying the most current version. There's obviously much more to see in Tokyo than what can be briefly summarized in a 144-page book, but it's extremely portable and I recommend it especially to people who have never traveled to Japan before.

Both more and less than the movie

I've been a fan since childhood of "The Long Gray Line," the John Ford film that was based on this book, and so I've wanted to read "Bringing Up the Brass" for a long time. Finally doing so was a rewarding experience -- not only (although mostly) to meet the real Marty Maher behind the Tyrone Power character, but also to see what was gained and what was lost when the novel was adapted to the screen.

If, like me, you come to this book through the prism of the movie, you'll find this story a lot less linear than the movie. Although Marty tells his story (and it's clear from the text that most of this book was literally "as told to" his coauthor Nardi Reeder Campion) in a mostly chronological way, there's still a bit of skipping around and some gaps in the time-frame. Not everything fits together quite as well as it does in the film, but life is like that. The book also lacks the sometimes-schmaltzy sentimentality of the film.

At the same time, the reader who knows the movie will be able to recognize many of the seeds in this book that grew into key scenes on film.

The more interesting and honest task, though, is to try to separate the movie from the book and read (and review) the latter on its own merits. When you do, Marty comes across as a charming and entertaining man with an interesting story to tell. He saw an awful lot in his half-century-plus at West Point, and does seem to have been truly beloved by generations of graduates. He certainly could have filled many more pages with his reminiscences, and it's perhaps a shame that he didn't. I would have liked to have read more about life on the Point and how it changed over the decades.

But this book is Marty's story, not West Point's, and while the two were nearly synonymous -- or so it seems -- for many decades, many people have told the Academy's story. It was up to Marty and his co-author to tell his own, and it's a wonderful thing that he did. He's a man who deserves to be remembered, and remembered with affection -- not only by those who had a chance to know him, but also by those of us who have only experienced him in film or print.

My father's best friend: Marty Maher

Today I was looking for "Bringing up the Brass" with Marty Maher. I couldn't find it so I looked on Amazon. com and they didn't have it either. Marty and my Dad were big buddies. They loved to share a drink at Al Cohen's Park Restaurant and as I grew up I was invited to join them once in awhile. When WW 2 broke out I went with a couple of friends and joined the Army. After three years of service I came home from Europe. I took the train home and walked up the steep hill from the station. Excited to be home I stopped in Cohen's for a drink before going home to shock by Mom and Dad. There were no cell phones in 1945. I walked in, taking my favorite seat by the window. I heard a voice from up the bar: "Give that soldier a drink!" It was Marty Maher and sitting with him was my dad. Patrick, the bartender didn't know what to say, but he poured me my favorite drink. It took me a few minutes to try to relax. I walked up the bar to greet Marty and my Dad. I was home! Will I find a copy of "Bringing up the Brass? I think so!

Outstanding

I agree with everything the first reviewer said. I had the pleasure of actually "Bringing Up the Brass". Believe it or not, I found a copy in my local library. I returned it when I finished it. I tried to go back, but the library has no listing for it anymore. Sad

Interesting approach to a doctrinal subject; foregoes the endless line of cases method in favor of explaining principles in the abstract. Very different than every other casebook in its pedagogical style, but I grew to enjoy it.

Bernard Lewis is Cleveland E. Dodge Professor Emeritus of Near Eastern Studies, and Long-Term Member of the Institute for Advance Study, Princeton University. "The Arabs in History", according to Lewis's words in the Preface, is "not so much a history of the Arabs as an essay in interpretation...I have sought to isolate and examine...the place of the Arabs in human history, their achievement, and the salient characteristics of the several ages of their development." Lewis's interpretation is neither personal nor novel. Four-fifths of the book are devoted to the four centuries of greatness before the Arab world, already in decline, passed under Seljuk rule in the 11th century A.D.; and the period from the Ottoman conquest in 1517 to the recent present is compressed into 18 pages. Within these limits Lewis has admirably achieved his object, notably bringing out broad economic trends.

On the whole, Lewis follows the orthodox lines -- orthodox at the time he wrote it, at any rate -- in his interpretation, including the treatment of Muhammad and the rise of Islam, the caliphate and the Islamic empire, the Muslim civilization and its eclipse. The salient characteristics of the several ages of the development of the Arabs are emphasized but not their literary or scientific achievement. All in all, "The Arabs in History" is a readable and reliable work.

Decent intro to this part of the world

Bernard Lewis is probably one of the West's most recognizable and respected experts on the Middle East. Fluent in Arabic and having lived in various countries of the Middle East, he has written a plethora of books on this region for the western reader. THis is one of his more recent works, and provides a quick and digestable history of the Arab people; i.e. the people living in and around the Arabian peninsula

The book starts by examining the region before Islam. The pagan culture is examined, along with the local geography, climate, and economy. Next, the book shows how Islam came about thru Mohammed and his teachings, and how Islam came to be the predominant religion and social force in the region. The book then goes into the history of the Sunni-Shiite split, the growth of Islamic empires such as the Umayyads, Turks, etc. The book ends with the topic of Western influence in the region, and how this is affected by the Israel question and oil.

Overall, the book is fairly easy to read and serves as a good introduction to the region. It is suitable for students in college, high school, or adults, and can be picked up by anyone without prior knowledge of the region.

About the Author
Tommaso Falcone, MD, FRCS(C), FACOG, is Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and Chairman of the Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. He is Vice Chairman of the Office of Professional Staff Affairs of the Cleveland Clinic. He is co-editor of a textbook, Clinical Reproductive Medicine and Surgery (Elsevier). He is co-author of a laparoscopic surgery atlas (Elsevier) and co-editor of Congenital Mullerian Anomalies (Lippincott). He is also co-author of a patient educational book titled Overcoming Infertility. Dr. Hurd is Professor of Reproductive Biology and the Lilian Hanna Baldwin Chair endowed in Gynecology and Obstetrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is Chief of Reproductive Endocrinology Infertility at University Hospitals/MacDonald Women's Hospital. For almost two decades, he has been an active clinician and researcher focusing on reproductive endocrinology and infertility. He started his academic career as the Director of the IVF program at the University of Michigan Medical School. He then directed the IVF program and Reproductive Endocrinology Division at Indiana University School of Medicine. Most recently, he was the Chief of OB/GYN and the Assistant Dean for Military Affairs at Write State University School of Medicine in Dayton Ohio. Dr. Hurd came to University Hospitals in 2007 after finishing a 31 year career with the US Air Force Reserve.

Doctorow Delivers Gripping Stories about the Ordinary Man

SWEET LAND STORIES is another superlative venture for E.L. Doctorow, one of the very finest writers in the country. Though known best for his larger tomes that mingle history and fiction as well as anyone has ever done, this small book of five stories reveals a master in creating characters and stories in a few pages that become indelible in the reader's mind. In his hands the most apparently simple settings become backdrops for complex, extensive tapestries that reveal how the 'little man/woman' can be pitched and tossed into the most bizarre tangle of events and yet somehow survive. In a time when many of us worry about the spiritual vacuum of life in the 21st Century, when the individual seems buried in the media pile of homogenation, look to Doctorow's fertile mind to remember and perhaps redefine the role of the Everyman. These stories are varied and extraordinarily well written: 'A House on the Plains' seems to be a tale of survival found in fleeing an urban center to a new life for a family on the plains, only to become a wholly different surprising macabre tale in the end: 'Baby Wilson' focuses on a couple who walk out a hospital with someone else's baby, flee, and watch their lives mutate; 'Walter John Harmon' concerns a community of brainwashed folk under the influence of a Spiritual Leader and the consequences of manipulation in the religion realm; 'Jolene: A Life' follows the course of an abused orphan through the country as she moves from one bad husband to the next - holding our hearts in her hand; 'Child, Dead, in the Rose Garden' is Doctorow's indictment of the credibility gap in the White House management of Intelligence sharing - a different and terrifying aside on terrorism so much in focus today. Great Stories...

I've said I don't know how many times that I really don't like short stories. But every now and then I'll pick up a short story book, and I'm usually always disappointed. Well, not this time. These 5 stories grab your attention from start to finish.

The first...A House On The Plains, is the tale of a mother and son and their murderous means of living, and how they continue to get away with it. The second...Baby Wilson, is the story of two lovers. A shady man, and a delusional woman who kidnaps a newborn child and tries to pass it off as their own, while the man finds a way to get them out of the mess she created.

The third...Jolene: A Life, was my favorite. We meet Jolene at the age of fifteen. An orphan who over the span of 10 yrs. goes through three husbands, a stint in a psychiatric hospital, a mobster boyfriend, living the high life, being homeless, and countless jobs, some pretty gritty. The fourth...Walter John Harmon, is an inside look at life in a cult. Members give all their wealth and possessions to 'prophet' Walter John Harmon in exchange for a peaceful and clean community. But they are so disillusioned, they cannot comprehend when he betrays them.

And finally...Child, Dead, In The Rose Garden. This was my least favorite. A dead child is found in the White House Rose Garden after an event. Special Agent Molloy sets out trying to find the answers as to who, why, and how this act was carried out. I definitely recommend this book. The stories are short and very intense. I will most certainly be giving more of Mr. Doctorow's books a chance.

Gripping Tales of Life on the Fringes

Short stories are quite a challenge. You have to establish characters, mood, setting, conflict and context quickly. Then you have to move forward surely to your target with little wasted effort. If you accomplish all that, you only succeed if the story teaches you something that you find compelling. By those standards, the five stories in Sweet Land Stories are a tour de force.

I was surprised to find this because I find Mr. Doctorow's novels to move in a very leisurely pace. But here, that pace turns into just the right speed.

What the stories have in common is that you enter into worlds that operate at the fringes of society rather than near their center. So your characters have different problems than you and I think about every day. They also have unique solutions to their problems. The shift in focus is so complete that it's almost like reading science fiction. But the shift has a tether back to our lives . . . a tether that makes the lessons universal for us all. It's very impressive.

In the first story, A House on the Plains, we have an attractive mother and her son who find themselves living on a farm they don't know how to operate after the mother's husband died in Chicago. The mother likes men. What they do next will surprise you with its chilling elements. The story is told from the perspective of the son which makes it quite macabre. What is our responsibility to our parents . . . and to our fellow humans?

Baby Wilson will haunt you. A young woman decides to kidnap a baby. She's convinced the baby is hers. How will her boyfriend deal with this? You will find yourself in the shoes of the boyfriend as you share his dilemma. How do you protect the baby and your girlfriend?

Walter John Harmon takes you deeply into the spiritual life of a cult whose messianic leader is under siege. How will the challenges of that siege affect the leader and the cult? You experience the story from the perspective of a cult member who is a lawyer trying to protect the cult. The story raises fine questions about self-deception that we all practice.

Jolene: A Life is a very sad story. Born with beauty but few other advantages, Jolene floats like a wood chip atop the roiling waters of life. As her beauty is used up, she finds herself falling below the water line. And ultimately, she finds out what it is to love and lose. You see life as Jolene sees it.

Child, Dead, in the Rose Garden is a cynical look at the ethics of powerful politicians and business people that will leave you gasping with its pain. You see this from the perspective of an investigator into the unexplained death of a child in the White House's Rose Garden.

I don't remember a more compelling set of short stories written since the turn of the century. Don't miss them!
