About the Author

Maria Montessori, born in Italy in 1870, dedicated her life to learning how best to educate children―particularly the poorest, most challenged children―during their vulnerable beginnings. Today her legacy is evident worldwide. She died in the Netherlands in 1952.

John Chattin-McNichols, Ph.D., is the President of the American Montessori Society and Professor of Education at Seattle University. He is the author and editor of several books on Montessori education.

FALSE ADVERTISEMENT

This is NOT THE ABSORBENT MIND but a boot leg copy full of typos, missing illustrations, and even 40+ pages missing from the actual copy. I am attaining a Montessori certification and was often confused reading this book wondering what other class mates were talking about in a discussion until I realized that this was not the actual book. It is Dr Montessori's words but incomplete. There is not even a copywright date anywhere in the book. The chapters have different page numbers, chapter names, missing illustrations, and figures from the actual translations of Dr Montessori. The typos in the book are weird such as an occasional $ placed in a word. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!

In the description of this book they even state the the book you are able to search in is not the actual book you receive, and they state that the book showed is by another publishing company but what you buy is their book.......TOTALLY FALSE ADVERTISEMENT....... this kind of thing really makes me mad...... I have never given anyone a bad review but this is a SHAME to the Dr Maria Montessori name.

Important Information regarding the Chalkboard Edition

I have been working in and studying Montessori for nearly twenty years. I recently purchased a new copy of The Absorbent Mind, this one with the chalkboard on front. This book is incomplete (from missing pages to an entire chapter), does not use Dr. Montessori's words and on many occasions distorts the actual meaning of the concepts discussed. I would strongly recommend investing in a different version.
The book Dr. Montessori wrote is a very different experience than this one represents. If you are interested in the book seek out a different edition consider one with a forward by John Chattin - McNicholes. The Absorbent Mind [ABSORBENT MIND] [Paperback]

I tried, I really tried.

So many people have enjoyed and recommended this book to me and on numerous occasions I attempted to get through the material. I finally came to the conclusion that I cannot read Maria Montessori straight. She is so! full! of exclamations!! about the wonder!! of children! and gets off on these raptured tangents and I can't seem to follow her train of thought. I know she's worth studying, because she had some really great ideas, but I'll have to stick to people who waded through her original works and interpreted them in a popular way. The Absorbent Mind is not an easy read for the beach, or a quick 'how to educate your kids' handbook, but if you are doing your thesis on early childhood education, I guess you'll have to hunker down and do the hard work of reading it.

Double Trouble and Double Murder

The Case of the Mischievous Doll

The ‘Foreword’ is dedicated to W. R. Rule, Major USAF, who studied law, then specialized in the field of legal medicine, as it applies to the military. He is currently Legal Counsel for the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. The Armed Forces have developed a nearly perfect system for the administration of justice.

Della Street tells Perry Mason a young woman, Dorrie Ambler, has come to establish her personal identification through an appendectomy scar. Perry suggests fingerprints would be better. Dorrie is afraid of becoming a victim of a frame-up! She has been given clothes to wear, even shoes and underwear; but she won’t explain. Perry has her followed when she leaves. Dorrie goes to the airport, and does the craziest thing you could imagine (Chapter 2)! The police show up and arrest the woman who came out of the rest room. This is one goofy case or client. The five o’clock news tells of the event at the airport and that Minerva Minden, the madcap heiress of Montrose, has been arrested for her pranks.

Then Dorrie Ambler shows up, and tells about the job she was hired to do. [Anyone remember “The Red-Headed League”?] A lot of personal questions were asked to qualify for this high-paying job. Dorrie had to wear a complete outfit and walk at an intersection. Dorrie tells Mason how she identified the detective agency that gave her instructions. When she went there to learn more, she saw her double waiting there for her car. Dorrie got the license number of her double’s car (Chapter 3). Because she was afraid of being used for a sinister purpose, Dorrie staged that scene at the airport. Perry figures out why Dorrie was hired, and how she is being used.

In Chapter 4 the trickery employed results in the police apparently waiting to arrest Dorrie Ambler for a crime she didn’t commit! Perry Mason and Paul Drake come right over on this “red-hot lead”. But the door is locked, and a woman screams. They break in to find a body on the floor, so they call the police. The police find a stolen car that was involved in a hit-and-run in Dorrie’s garage (Chapter 5). Can a case be fixed by selecting the judge, and then a lawyer who is a good friend (Chapter 6)? Is Dorrie involved in a crooked scheme that if financed by a Las Vegas businessman (Chapter 7)? Is Dorrie an innocent victim or did she inveigle Perry into her scheme (Chapter 9)?

Chapter 10 has a shocking surprise. Minerva Minden was taken in for questioning by the police. She will be charged with a double murder. Perry warns Minerva against her “madcap heiress” reputation. People are convicted of murder on evidence that only shows guilt of adultery (Chapter 11). [Is this a reference to the Dr. Sam Shepherd case?] The trial begins in Chapter 12. The prosecution brings out new facts against Minerva, which fills in unknown details in this case. The witnesses give their testimony. One witness has a shocking story to tell! This is the most important chapter. Perry Mason tells Paul Drake to get a quick report on all unsolved stick-ups. Perry has only one chance for a not guilty verdict (Chapter 13). Chapter 14 has the testimony of Lt. Tragg on the thumb prints, and another shocking discovery! The judge orders a directed verdict of ‘not guilty’ after the conflicting stories are resolved (Chapter 15). The loose ends are tied up in the last chapter. The ending is different from many other stories. [Gardner managed to ridicule both eyewitness and circumstantial evidence in this story.]

Apologetics is the discipline that rationally seeks to defend the Bible and Christianity through both the presentation of evidence and the use of reason. The readings in Mind Your Faith were designed for an introductory college course in evidences. Author Doy Moyer was a professor of Biblical studies and philosophy at Florida College in Temple Terrace, FL, though he has now left the school and returned to full-time preaching. There are 25 chapters with each one purposefully kept brief and able to stand on its own as an introduction to various fields covered by apologetics.

Subjects discussed include an introduction to apologetics, the reliability of the Bible, the resurrection and deity of Christ, and the existence of God. The chapter on “Salvation: Is There Only One Way to God?” is especially noteworthy, and the chapters on evolution, post-modernism, and atheism all contain much relevant and useful material. Each chapter has discussion questions, so the book could well be useful for teen or adult Bible classes in church and also for part of a home school apologetics course for high school students. An entertaining and different kind of book about Panama

I read a lot of fiction and, quite frankly, loved this book as much as anything I've read lately. Stough has written an unpretentious chronicle of Panama from the Spanish conquest to the present--and beyond. The story is told through people connected by blood and also by Panama's rich, varied culture. There are enough heroic, doomed, quixotic characters--spread over 350 years--to shame the Bard, a collection of natives, Spanish conquistadors, English pirates, opportunists of every ilk and, of course, French and American canal builders.

I always appreciate learning more about history in a way that is easy to digest. This book is thought out and well-written. The characters and languare are rich. This book has given Captain Morgans Spiced Rum ads a whole new meaning for me.

Stone Flute is entertaining, but historically unreliable

I served half a century ago in the Peace Corps in Panama simultaneously with Charles Stough, but we had only a barely passing acquaintance. (I remember seeing a few of the columns he wrote for his family-owned newspaper back in the States at that time, under the rubric "Rotten to the Corps," which seemed at the time, and 50 years later still seems, a reflection of singularly poor taste.) Having read only brief excerpts from this book, "Stone Flute,"I am not really qualified to review it as a whole, but the excerpts I have read relate to a subject about which I know a good deal: the 1941 massacre of the Swiss and German members of a religious colony by the Panamanian police under the command of a Captain Antonio Huff.

In "Stone Flute" Stough has written a fictionalized history of Panam�, including a chapter on the massacre. Presumably because Arnulfo Arias, who was president of Panam� at the time of the massacre, was still living at the time Stough published his book, he appears thinly disguised as the President Villalba. I presume because the laws of libel--which is a criminal offense in Panam�--do not apply to the dead, Stough portrays Antonio Huff, and the Instructor General (in practical terms, at the time, the national commander of the police), Fernando G�mez Ayau, with their own, true names.

Unfortunately however, Stough obviously relies for his version of events on a scurrilous fabrication published in Spanish as "Holocausto en Panam�" by Aristides Iv�n Hass�n R., a hack job commissioned by the military government of Manuel Antonio Noriega to besmirch the reputation of Arnulfo Arias in order to further the candidacy of a Noriega-puppet in the presidential elections. It is an incoherent, Jew-obsessed, chronicle of murders that never occurred, a "holocaust" in Panama that was entirely a fiction of Hassan's bizarre imagination. Unfortunately, some of its blow-by-blow descriptions of unimaginably brutal carnage, which Hass�n asserts was perpretrated by the Arias government under direct, personal orders of Hitler, are incorporated into Stough's "Stone Flute."

While the police did indeed kill twelve innocents and injure eight others, including women and children, in a cold-blooded and alcohol fueled massacre on July 7, 1941, most of the other incidents invented by Hass�n and parroted by Stough never took place. Hass�n, his scurrilous book, his pointless and outrageous exhumations of the mass grave at Cotito, and a CNN "news broadcast" by a thoroughly hood-winked Peter Arnett were successful in creating the myth that Arnulfo Arias--whose politics were bizarre and racist, to be sure--was an out-and-out Nazi acting under director orders from Hitler, which is simply not true, as the historical record demonstrates.

Unfortunately, Charles Stough fell for the same fabricated story, but fortunately, "Stone Flute" was never widely circulated in Panam�, and probably did little to further perpetrate the fraud.

About the Author
I write high-octane steampunk fantasy. All my stories have an adventure at the heart with a liberal sprinkling of romance and intrigue thrown into the mix. To confuse things, I also write adventure travel books set firmly on planet Earth. Weird, I know, but it makes me�tick. I am a South African, currently living in the UK with my husband, Andrew, my three daughters, a yapping Toy Pomeranian, and a fantastic farm cat called Pixel. When I'm not writing, I'm reading, traveling, herding kids around, taking dogs for walks, and avoiding all cooking.

Totally grabs you and sucks you right in!

This was my first book by Gwynn White and I couldn't put it down. I stayed up all night just to finish it and can't wait to read the rest of the series to find out what happens next. I just adore Lynx and her spunky feisty persona.

African steampunk fantasy at its best!

Rebels Honor offers a great new voice in fantasy with the world building strongly reminiscent of Africa. Lynx is a strong and interesting heroine and the concepts of advanced tech fallen into misuse and largely forgotten is both intriguing and central to the plot. The opening chapters of the book are extremely strong and create a vivid and realistic view of a world divided, with Lynxes clan, village and ostrich hunting jumping out of the page at the reader. In the remainder of the book there is interesting misdirection and misrepresentation of characters which increases the sense of intrigue as well as anticipation - you as the reader know something about each character that the characters collectively do not and it is a heady experience. Axel is a wonderful and straightforward match to Lynx and you find yourself really cheering for him as the story progresses, but he is not as complex and layered as Lukan and this is definitely the character to watch! This was an easy and enjoyable read and comes highly recommended.

Well worth it

This is the first book I have read from Gywnn White and it was good. It's not a typical romantic story, though there is romance in the plot, and bonus points for it not being hard out political either. Timeline wise can almost be compare to the Shannara series from Terry Brooks in that it happens way into the future after a great war threatened the whole of civilisation; but in this case some technology still exits. The main characters are complex and well developed and continue to grow throughout the book and even in the second one which I am currently reading. Lynx, as a heroine, shows that complexity and growth really well as she goes from being a raider in the Norrin tribe to being the crown princess and future empress. She finds out that nothing is as cut and dried as she though and has to revise quite a bit of her idealism and learn to maneuver among all the greys.
