Matt Neuberg's REALbasic: The Definitive Guide is a diligent and thorough introductory text for REALbasic 2 on the Macintosh, an object-oriented programming environment based on components and BASIC. Even if you've never programmed before, this title--combined with the power and ease of use of REALbasic--is all you need to start writing your own software for the Mac.
In addition to being a tutorial to the REALbasic tool itself, the author's introduction to object-oriented software is remarkable for its patience while also getting the beginner to think in objects. (Besides an authority on Macintosh programming, Neuberg has a Ph.D. in ancient Greek. This book is probably alone in that it discusses objects while quoting Plato.) There is a full tour of REALbasic program statements, data types, and the nuts and bolts of working with the environment and building basic programs.
The heart of this text covers the various controls and features available in REALbasic. The author discusses simple and advanced user controls (like buttons, edit controls, menus, and list boxes). Neuberg's tour here will let any reader design user interfaces and add event handlers to provide program functionality. Highlights include how to display images and create animation, sound, and video within REALbasic. (Here, the author extends the already strong multimedia support in REALbasic with his own code for a simple video game.) About the Author
Matt Neuburg started programming computers in 1968, when he was 14 years old, as a member of a literally underground high school club, which met once a week to do timesharing on a bank of PDP-10s by way of primitive teletype machines. He also occasionally used Princeton University's IBM-360/67, but gave it up in frustration when one day he dropped his punch cards. He majored in Greek at Swarthmore College, and received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1981, writing his doctoral dissertation (about Aeschylus) on a mainframe. He proceeded to teach Classical languages, literature, and culture at many well-known institutions of higher learning, most of which now disavow knowledge of his existence, and to publish numerous scholarly articles unlikely to interest anyone. Meanwhile he obtained an Apple IIc and became hopelessly hooked on computers again, migrating to a Macintosh in 1990. He wrote some educational and utility freeware, became an early regular contributor to the online journal TidBITS, and in 1995 left academe to edit MacTech Magazine. He is also the author of Frontier: The Definitive Guide and REALbasic: The Definitive Guide. In August 1996 he became a freelancer, which means he has been looking for work ever since. He is the author of Frontier: The Definitive Guide and REALbasic: The Definitive Guide, both for O'Reilly & Associates.

Sadly, The Best Book On REALbasic Programming

Computer books tend to be outdated rather quickly, sometimes before hitting the shelves. Programming books tend to have a longer shelf life.
When REALbasic: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition was released over four years ago in 2001, it was current and truly the definitive book on REALbasic. It still is, though that isn't the praise you might think.
The folks at REALsoftware are constantly improving the language and the Definitive Guide was outdated by 2003. Today it is about as relevant as a definitive guide to home theater telling you to use a 21" TV, Quadraphonic stereo with 8 Track tape and turntable and a Sony Betamax.
Today's REALbasic generates programs that work on Windows, Linux and Mac OS9, OS X and soon OS X/86. The technologies incorporate XML, XST, DOM, SOAP and more. The only reference to ANY of these in this book is that you can save your source code as XML and edit it with a standard text editor.
All this said, Mr. Neuburg's REALbasic: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition is still the best and most recommended book for REALbasic which shows you how much of a market there is for new, good books for this great language.

Excellent book but read it several times

I came to REALbasic with some knowledge of programming, primarily database programming. I also had some familiarity with Virtual Basic on the PC.
However, I had NO real knowledge of object oriented programming. This is a big hurdle that I was able to overcome with Neuburg's book.
I read some of the web tutorials, the documentation and the Dummies book. My first go through Definitive Guide I did not understand much.
Then I started on my project. At this point, I would look up particular issues and Definitive Guide would tend to be the most useful.
Then I read it again. Finally, I started to click on what object oriented programming is. For this I credit Neuberg's book.
Then I read it again. This time I found it enjoyable. I like his writing style. I think that he has many well-expressed insights and he has lots of information about the "quirks" of REALbasic. Knowledge of these quirks is important.
I have come to the opinion that this is a VERY GOOD book.
Learning a programming language "on your own" is not all that easy. I do not begrudge the cost of buying several books when I start learning a new language. Definitive Guide was absolutely key for me. I think that I would have failed without it, at least in terms of using the object oriented programming that is a part of Real Basic.
Learning the language has been very rewarding. I cannot imagine trying to learn Real Basic as an object oriented program without this book.

Fairly good

RealBasic is really great first programming language: it is easy, powerful (object oriented stuff and all) and generates fast and tight executables. With modest Java, BASIC and general programming skills I was really happy to find it and felt home immediately. After reading the PDF-books that came along the package, I still wanted some more in-depth-view, and came across to Neuburg's book.
I have developed a rule years ago: the thinner the programming book is, the better it usually is. Why? As the book gets thick, there is too much "static over the signal". This is true with this book as there definitely is too much text (as somebody said). With a little squeeze, the same stuff could be explained with half the text and it would make the book more usable and understandable. Also some tightening with the structure of the book could be in order.
I also would say that this book may not work for a beginner -- too difficult vocabulary and sometimes the concepts are presented in backward order. I have seen quite many other books explaining object oriented programmig concepts in much more understandable way -- sorry to say, as the realbasic usually is a beginner language this would have been very good forum.
If you have already done some realbasic stuff, want to know more and are somewhat fluent with the object oriented concepts, this could be a good book for you... a must, like it is for me.
